4839.0. "TFSO" by COPS01::JNOSTIN () Tue Sep 10 1996 10:11

I'd like to have this base note serve as a place to put "stuff"
(information) about TFSO news. I know there have been other notes
about this subject and this subject has probably been beaten to death.

However, TFSO affects all of us, even if we are not the ones being
    TFSO'd.

I understand that a large "hit" will take place on Monday, September
16th. Some fellow employees have already been told they will be hit
on that date. Some groups will be cut 40 - 50%.

The process of TFSO makes me sick. Many of us can expect it but many
    are "broad-sided" without any warning.

why create a whole new note on this when there are probably plenty to
add to. doesn't make any sense.
4839.2Why not?COPS01::JNOSTINTue Sep 10 1996 10:296
    Excuse me .1

Why not add a new note? Why go back to old notes. This one will be
    current.

Do you have anything else to contribute?

This has been going on for over 6 years in this company.

How can anyone possibly be being "broad-sided"??

This is the only way this company knows how to cut expenses, cut cut
cut, and when you're done cutting, cut again!

Keep your skills current, and if/when the cut comes, you will be able
to get another job fairly quickly. The Boston Globe had over 108 pages
of high-tech jobs this past Sunday!

Good advise. The best thing is to keep your skills current.

Concerning being "broad-sided"; my point was that there are still some
employees who are working harder than ever and believe in Digital, only
to be tapped on the shoulder to be told that they are being cut.
    Believe me it does happen.

Working hard doesn't necessarily mean working "smart", and many
are simply in the wrong place at the wrong time...there's no
    helping that.

Having the discussion in one note means that future people who come looking for
information will have an easier time of finding and reading what might help
them.

I dislike it when I go to research something, and DIR/TITLE=xxx lists 57 notes
which sound like they pertain to the subject of choice. I then have to navigate
through all those notes, some of which will prove irrelevant. Much preferable
(for me) to see things on the topic in one note.

As to currency, I have often found it advantageous to have entries which span
many years located together, as one can more readily see the changes which have
ocurred over time.

4839.7I vote for a new note on the topicMSDOA::BIRMINGHAMTue Sep 10 1996 12:259
I agree with .2 that a new note is better than adding to some of the
older notes. It take less time to look at the latest information rather
than have to screen through hundreds of replies to get the straight
skinny on what's happening at the present.

Hopefully someone will update this with what groups are being hit and
to what degree. Good luck to all...!

    	DIR/TITLE = TFSO

Hopefully, directory "listing" contains 1 note and you now
type in that number, for example, 25.0

    	Then you can do a

    	DIR/ALL 25.LAST-25.0

and, by looking for a date that's pretty close to the 1
you want to start at, type in the number for that note
and reply [for example, 25.1000] and start reading from
    	there.

There are 42 notes in here with TFSO in the title. That's
about 40 too many [since a few are "goodbye" notes from dep-
    	arting employees].

For a good example of "ridiculous redundancy", take a look
at the titles [and authors] of 2233 and 2235.

Couldn't we just start up an internal home page titled TFSO and put it
all there? I mean, it's behind our firewall and everything and we
could even make it an initiative of the new Employee Partnership
Program. Heck if you are smart and looking for work, you could
volunteer to do this for Mother Digital, they'd train you on Hot Metal
and Java Script and then when it's your turn you are fully trained to
hit the streets. Ha who says there's no solutions amongst the mockery
    of life!

Let's please try to keep to the subject of the base note. All of you

If you think this note is stupid, etc. then don't participate in this

    current.

This logic tends to imply that you don't understand how notes
works. Please try the notes command:

        	set seen/before=10-sep-1996:20:15

then hit <ENTER> (*NOT* <RETURN>). If you do it right you'll
see how replies can be "current" in old topics.
