4813.0. "How to change MTS mail forwarding?" by INDYX::ram (Ram Rao, PBPGINFWMY) Thu Aug 29 1996 20:37

I have been trying to get CCS to change my MTS mail forwarding entry
for the last couple of weeks, and I haven't got past the stage of
having them understand what I need done.

Having been frustrated with CCS services 4 years ago, I surrendered
all my VMS accounts and ALL-IN-1 accounts, and set up and ran my own
mail system on my UNIX workstation. This has worked like a charm! In
order for people to be able to send ALL-IN-1 Mail to me, I had CCS (or
whatever they were called then) set up my MTS entry such that all mail
addressed to Ram Rao @INI was fowarded (via Mail-11) to:
        indyx::ram
This has worked great for the past 4 years.

Now desiring to unburden myself with the overhead of maintaining DECnet,
as well as to avail of the new features in the ALL-IN-1 to SMTP gateways
(such as automagic conversion of MIME attachments), I need to have my
Message router entry changed to:
        [email protected]@internet

Who do I contact to make such a request? The CCS Help Desk is unable to
comprehend my request, after 3 verbal and 2 written explanations.

Thanks,

Ram

Where in the world are you? Around here I'm fortunate to have
people who can (and have done for me a few times ;-) what you
ask, and the response time (once I get hold of them to state
the request) is usually within minutes.

Ram : Gotta agree with Petri - the problem is usually the other way
round - i.e. the end users being so dyed-in-the-wool with their
particular blankety-blank e-mail system that they are blind to the
enormous benefit of having MTS capable of routing and delivering to it.

In your case you've got it all figured out - I'm just very surprised
that CCS can't help you. At my site that sort of thing happens all the
time now with the proliferation of SMTP and Exchange and other things.
Typical response time to a formally logged call would be an hour or two.

P.S. Message Router has for years been capable of distributed
management. If your local (MTS site code) CCS support person is having
difficulty understanding your request, then ask him/her to call for
reinforcements (e.g from Stow or Parker Street) - they should be
    quite willing to help out.

Forwarded the base note to the appropriate person. Not sure where
Ram has been getting a run around. This is a standard request.

Re 4813.2: I'm sure that's true, Chris, but it doesn't go far to explain
why our local CCS (?) support managed to bollix up my mail for six weeks
early this year, or why I still can't get 8-bit mail passed to my UNIX
system, which is perfectly capable of handling it.

There's an old story about a fellow who offers another man a ride in his
mule-drawn wagon. The second man steps up onto the seat, and the owner
reaches under the seat, takes out a thick stick, walks up to his mule and
hits it heavily on the head; then he gets onto the seat, shakes the reins,
and the mule starts off.

The second man is shocked. "Why on earth did you hit your poor mule on the
head before we started off?" he asks the owner.

The owner answers "First you have to get his attention."

4813.5MTS Entry modified ...YASHAR::RONNIEBDebt Free! Thank You, Jesus!Fri Aug 30 1996 11:2519
  Hi Ram,

First, let me apologize for the apparent lack of response to your more
than reasonable request for a change to your MTS routing entry. I do
not know the particulars and, at this point, they no longer matter.
Please be assured that what you experienced is not typical of the CCS
organization, as other replies have indicated.

I have taken the responsibility to effect a "permanent" change to the
appropriate MTS Message Router system that routes your e-mail. If you
find that you are experiencing e-mail delivery problems, please contact
me directly and I will work with you to correct the problem(s).

Please feel free to call me directly if you wish to discuss this, or any
other situation involving the CCS organization.

  Thanks, and regards,

To give some kudos to the CCS folks, I sent mail earlier this
week asking to change my MTS forwarding from STAR::MFOLEY to
[email protected] and within 1 day I got back a reply
saying that it was done. Moments after that, I was getting
Readers Choice mail sent via SMTP. Finally, no more DECnet.

This notesfile works wonders!!

This morning I have been deluged with phone calls and mail messages
from CCS offering help. The change I requested has been made, and now
I am happily receiving my mail via SMTP.

Thank you all for your outpouring of support to this foot-soldier
out in the corn fields of Indiana!!!
