4774.0. "distributing internal software externally?" by ALFAM7::URBAN () Wed Aug 14 1996 12:30

    I have written some software to do data collection on Digital UNIX. It
    is primarily intended for benchmark situations, where the measurement
    software should use as little system resources as possible.

    I would like to make the software available to the public via
    ftp.digital.com and announce it using the alpha-osf-managers mailing
    list.

    The Question is: from whom do I need to get permission to do this? In
    principle, the software is very similar to alan rollow's 'monitor',
    which is freely available.

    thanks

4774.1Maybe we should talk?DISCOS::SHAHWed Aug 14 1996 13:009
    Rob,

    Hi I am Manoj Shah, product manager for Capacity Planner product. May
    be we can use what you have. My product takes feed from all other UNIX
    platforms as well.

    Regards,
    Manoj

    At the moment, anybody within digital is welcome to the data collector.
    It can be found on:

    	NASAXP::collect.tar.gz			(DECnet)
    	nasaxp.rto.dec.com:collect.tar.gz	(anon ftp)

    At the moment, you need lsm installed (at least you need the includes)
    to be able to compile it. If you'd like the executable only, I can
    make them available (there are different ones for V3.x and V4).

4774.3DECUS, and/or freeware CDPERFOM::HENNINGWed Aug 14 1996 17:398
    Once upon a time, you could contribute freeware to DECUS and they would
    in turn redistribute it. It was a fairly simple form, which needed
    only a few signatures. Ask DECUS.

    Also, there is a freeware CD that comes with Digital UNIX. There ought
    to be a product manager somewhere in the UNIX group that would know the
    procedure for making contributions to it (and getting Digital's
    approval for it).

    He should be here shortly, Peter Kaiser, as I've seen some recent
    posting by him. He must be on vacation, it's August in Europe. I
    think he was involved in the Distribution of the first Freeware CD for
    Digital UNIX. You might want to send him at note at HERON::KAISER.

    Send mail to [email protected]. I don't think Pete is involved with
    this anymore. There's a new two-disc freeware set with Digital UNIX
    V4.0, and OpenVMS also has a freeware CD.

What month is it in your country?

The new UNIX freeware CD was done by UNIX Engineering, but I don't know
by whom in particular. For VMS, Steve Zalewski ([email protected])
would be an excellent contact.

I still get mail from outside Digital at [email protected], an address
established in 1992. And I answer it, too.

    Per Z, the creation of the next OpenVMS freeware disk has been
    passed to Glen Everhart ([email protected])...
