4726.0. "Access denied via Desktop to Member-only files" by ASABET::MCCALLION () Tue Jul 16 1996 10:45

    I will no longer have a VAX account as of August 1st.

    I am a member of several membership-only notesfiles.

    I now have Conferencing - [Notebook (Remote)] on my desktop
    (with Windows 95) HOWEVER, when I click on the Member only File
    I want, I get this message:
    -NOTES-E-NOTMEMBER, you are not a member of this conference

    What do I have to do to continue participating in these conferences
    using a desktop/laptop? How can I be identified to the database, etc..
    Who would I call?

    Thank you.

    From your VAX account, open each members-only conference.

    Do a SEND/MOD to send mail to the moderators of that conference, and
    request that you be given access from your notebook.

4726.2Mods need to add full ip/dns nameNAC::TRANTue Jul 16 1996 12:2611
    You need to have the mods add your full node name. Since you're not
    accessing the notes conferences from VMS anymore (and it's a
    members-only), then the mods need to add something similar to this:

    	node.site.dec.com::username (i.e. anything.mro.dec.com::MCCALLION)

    If you're unsure of the node naming convention, just post a "test" note
    in a public conference and look up in the upper left corner (of the
    message).

    And what if her PC is configured via DHCP? Won't she have a *new*
    node name/number after each re-boot?

For that matter, what about PC's coming in through the AltaVista tunnel?
It is my only connection to Digital these days.

(Maybe VAXnotes has outlived it usefullness in the TCP/IP era)

DEC Notes works just fine over TCP/IP with unrestricted conferences. If you're
trying to access a restricted conference with a system whose TCP/IP address
changes, *then* you have problems.

There needs to be another method of identifying members to allow access to
restricted conferences.

4726.6Ask in TeamLinks Conferencing ?XSTACY::cigire.ilo.dec.com::grainnesignal (SIGPAW, SIG_IGN);Wed Jul 17 1996 06:5410
Access to restricted notesfiles from TeamLinks conferencing
from desktops with DHCP-assigned addresses has been
discussed in the TeamLinks Conferencing errr, conference
(GALVIA::CONFERENCING) However, as far as I can remember,
no solution has yet been identified. If this is likely to be
a serious problem for you, you might want to contact the
TeamLinks development team and/or product management.

    Thanks for all the notes. One conference has been modified
    and I sent the "how to" to the other mods. The next problem
    will be when the TeamLinks account is closed.

    The noter that stated that maybe Notes had passed, maybe correct.
    What a shame!
