4715.0. "UNIX to OpenVMS Porting Assistance Required" by OTOOA::KOENDERS (Rick Koenders @OTO) Thu Jul 11 1996 15:01

I am an Account Manager for an ABU(?) TEM account. My customer has
an application that they would like ported from DEC UNIX C and C++ to
OpenVMS C and C++ on Alpha. The product that they would like ported is
a security/encryption package that is already available on numerous
other platforms but customer interest has motivated them to port it to
    OpenVMS.

I have looked for a couple of weeks now to try and find a group or
individual within Digital that would be able to assist with this but I
still have not received a positive answer. The customer is prepared to
pay. They need to understand the extent/cost of the port in order to
proceed and they would like us to do it.

Can anyone point me to someone that may be able to assist with this
port? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards,

    Rick Koenders

That's the problem with the Company - no one knows where to get
assistance. Where is OTO? Anyways, isn't that the responsibilities of
Digital Consulting/SI to do work that a customer wants to pay for.
Aren't they suppose to evaluate the process and determine what needs to
    be done?

Try these individuals and see if they can provide some sort of pointer.

Perhaps the OpenVMS Ambassador (formerly OpenVMS Partner) in Toronto, Chris
Sullivan, can help you.

    I have two comments:

    	1. Hallelujah! I'm so glad to see someone wanting to go from Unix
to OpenVMS for a change! It's so often the other way around.

    	2. There is a group that does migration in one direction and/or
the other. I *think* it's called Sector 7, but I may be way
wrong. I do know, though, a person who works in that group.
I suggest you send mail to ZIGLAR::PAVLICEK

    Good luck.

    re: .3

Hmmm. Thanks for the plug, Barry, but Sector 7 is an external vendor
which sells tools (& services) for OpenVMS to Unix conversions, not the
    other way around.

I was part of the the group trained in the Sector 7 toolkit about a
year and a half ago. Unfortunately, I never saw any action as a result
of the training (although I did hear distant rumbles of possible
engagements, I never heard confirmation of same).

Rick Pottinger (mentioned earlier, I believe) set up the training, so
he might have a lead on Unix to OpenVMS migration possibilities.

Call Don Gordon in the Orlando Florida Office. Don works with me in
System's Integration. If we can do most of the job remotely theres a
good change we can look at it further.

Re .5, I got VMS-style EMail from one ::HALLYB, but can't figure out
the IP-style return since all there was was a DECnet node number.

4715.11ELF didn't help?EVMS::HALLYBFish have no concept of fireMon Jul 15 1996 11:388
I guess I sent it from Area 51, oops wrong joke, EVMS::HALLYB aka
[email protected] (hope I didn't just violate some policy).
I'm also on STAR which forwards to EVMS.

My full last name is Hallyburton, which exceeded the 9-character
maximum in VMS back when I joined the group in 1981. Still here.

(Boring Explanation: ::HALLYB sent me some amusing offline email about
my Area 51 crack, but 'is email musta been sent via VMSmail to DRDAN::
and was forwarded to me in IP-land (where Eudora & I hang out, despite
my liking to use this ol' VAXstation for DECnotes) and thusly arrived
with EVMS:: or STAR:: auto-mangled by Some Evil Entity in the Mail-Maze
into some DECnet node number.) Since I try to remain ignorant of the
subtleties of ELF, preferring the Web interface thereto, I had no way
of inquiring where one HALLYB might hang out in EMail address space.
Hence I sent a "ping" out here, and got more than I expected. Now this
    is my revenge, mwaHaHAA)

(told you it would be boring)

(Tnx for liking my Area 51 crack, John) :-)
