4672.0. "Topic relationship to Digital, or why didn't 4661 get slammed when 4647 did?" by IAMNRA::SULLIVAN (Jesus is Coming? Look Busy!) Mon Jun 17 1996 18:26

SO what has 4661's discussion [almost exclusively] of Audio CD's have
to do with Digital? Topic 4647 just got slammed for that reason, why
hasn't that happened there? Moderator?

I would seriously like to understand. It looks, to me, to be a clear
case of the kind of discrimination and bias that topics like DECPlus
and our own corporate VoD policies would seek to minimize and prevent.

At least 4647's topic was related to corporate policies encouraging
valuing of diversity and their practice. I don't know if there are
any policies on audio compact disk's but I rather doubt it.

As for any interest I have in the DECPlus notes file... I don't know
BIGQ::SILVA nor have I ever even read the DECPlus notes file, and I'm
not inolved with DECPlus. I'm just affronted by the extreme rudness
and hypocracy of the treatment of these two notes threads.

Maybe this is why I so rarely read Digital notes...

So what *is* the point of this divergent treatment?

I don't usually reply to too many notes in here, but .0 is a bit off base. The
original note was about Digital software distribution media on CD's. I re-read
note 4661 and about 5 of 24 notes mentioned audio cd's, audio tapes or VCR
tapes, the rest of the conversation is how heat may effect CD's, whether
software distribution media or audio, there was nothing to distingush the two,
so I would have to beleive they were in reference to 4661.0. There is not note
conference to deal with this issue, that I know of, so why not post it in this
conference. DECplus seems to have their own forum for discussing issues and that
should be taken there.

4672.2How was prev different from any other non-work-centric topic?GEMEVN::GLOSSOPAlpha: Voluminously challengedMon Jun 17 1996 19:3237
I have to agree with .1 - 4661.0 is a question about handing of Digital
property that could cost Digital money (if it melted...)

The other note seemed reasonable as a pointer (as Steve had mentioned
in his moderator reply), but as with a lot of other topics that were sent
off other places:

    1) There was already a conference

    2) There is a difference between things that are primarily related
to working here at Digital, vs. things that would be factors at any
employer that are basically non-work issues that can have impacts
       in the workplace.

Just for example, I would expect the authors of a wide variety of postings
with religious overtones, sports, {take your pick}, that *wasn't* primarily
work-related to be told to take it elsewhere, even if the particular
topics were somehow related to Digital. (e.g. imagine "Interviews
with {Christians|Jews|Muslims|agnostics|atheists|smokers|skiers...}
at Digital".) The key thing is that while each of these topics might
be interesting interesting in its own right, including in relation
to tolerance, etc., they are not predominantly work-related items.

I don't see any substantial difference (from an exclusion criteria
perspective), for example, between the note was posted and a note
describing someone's difficultly in being able to pray at appropriate
times at work, wearing particular items of religious clothing, etc.
I would expect those topics, which also would be considered "interesting",
to be pointed off elsewhere.

(Not predominantly work-related items can also have a high degree
of controversy surrounding them. Personally, it would seem like
there are plenty of controversial things that are *predominantly*
work-related that are rightly the focus of this file. If Digital
doesn't start getting some revenue growth 20% higher just to match
the industry average [let alone leadership] it won't matter that
people *were once* Digital employees...)

I was wondering how this topic would get started again, or rather...
    when.

| 1) There was already a conference

No, there was or is not a conference for DECplus.

| 2) There is a difference between things that are primarily related to working
| here at Digital,

The CD's and the interview delt with working here at Digital.

| vs. things that would be factors at any employer that are basically non-work
| issues that can have impacts in the workplace.

If it can have impact in the workplace, then it is not basically a
non-work issue.

Speaking as a mainly read-only noter in this conference (and as someone
with a contract of uncertain term), I have up until now resisted the urge
to add anything to the discussions.

I will say that I will always remember this conference as having people
with extraordinarily delicate sensibilities. Much has happened in recent
weeks to reinforce that perception.

Note 4661 has now reached over 50 replies, most of them discussing
exotic ways of destroying CD-ROMs. The lack of intervention from
the moderators would seem to bear out the view implicit in the base
note that Note 4647 was not write-locked because of irrelevance but
because of prejudice. Could we have some consistency, please?
4672.9QUARK::LIONELFree advice is worth every centWed Jun 26 1996 11:096
Note 4647 was write-locked because it was an explicit attempt by an
organization to use DIGITAL as its "bulletin board" rather than a
notesfile or web site run by that organization. We've applied this policy
as consistently as we can.

    re: .4672

I have found about as many replies of 4661 to be related to the topic
of 'Can my software and documentation CDs survive in my trunk in the
summer?', which is a valid topic for this conference, as any other
topic in this conference. It is a judgement call as to when too many
replies get too far away from the topic being discussed. When this
happens we try to remind folks to stay on topic.
