I think this is another example of Digital being a "hardware company".
The operating system is a necessary evil needed to sell the box. Hence
a large fraction of our success stories, highlight the box, but neglect
to mention the operating system. Also if you look at the analyses
available internally of competitors systems, it is almost exclusively a
hardware comparison, with extreme neglect for operating system feature
comparison.

From the announcement June 13 :
+------------------------------------------------------------------------------+
John Rando, Vice President and General Manager,
Digital Services Division
June 13, 1996 -- On June 11, we announced the formation of the
Digital Services Division and the new services strategy. That
strategy will be executed through three service business
units. One of those business units is Multivendor Customer
Services (MCS). MCS will be focused on the highest level of
availability and interoperability support for complex
>>> multivendor environments. This business unit will play a
>>> critical role in ensuring Digital leadership in NT across the
>>> enterprise, 64 bit high performance UNIX computing and
>>> Internet/Intranet. MCS will also continue to be focused on
Digital's installed base to ensure customer satisfaction and
return on their investment.
With these challenges ahead, I am pleased to announce:
Peter A. Mercury
as
Vice President and General Manager
for the
Multivendor Customer Services Business Unit
Peter has been with Digital for twenty years in a variety of
financial, marketing and operational positions across the
Company. Most recently, Peter was Vice President of
Operations for MCS. Peter has B.S.B.A. and M.B.A. degrees
from Babson College and is a graduate of the Harvard Business
School Program for Management Development.
Please join me in wishing Peter good luck as MCS initiates
implementation of its new strategy to generate profitable
growth, ensure high levels of customer satisfaction and
provide new opportunities for our service professionals.

I would guess that "installed base" would include OpenVMS but...??
I'm surprised that with NT being the main thrust that someone hasn't mentioned
that old one egg, one basket that they use to complain about when it was VAX
and VMS. I know. NT works on many platforms.

| re .4,
First of all, you misspelled OpenVMS.
OpenVMS generates quite a bit of profit for this company. Not mentioning it as
part of a major win does not help the false general impression that Digital is
slowly abandoning OpenVMS. Mentioning it may indeed help in the continuation of
your paycheck.
