4572.0. "What facilities support Wireless & DHCP?" by TENNIS::KAM (Kam WWSE 714/261.4133 DTN/535.4133 IVO) Wed Apr 24 1996 22:32

I'm having a quarterly meeting this week in MKO. I have my HiNote
Ultra running Windows 95 and configured for DHCP. Upon boot, in MKO,
I am supplied an 'ip' address so I can get on the net and be as
productive as I am in my home city and office.

Part of our weekly meetings are in different facilities in the New
England area. LJO was one of the facilities we visited and I was
pretty disappointed that I couldn't get connected. A number of people
were utilizing Digital's Wireless technology but the facility wasn't
    supporting DHCP.

We visited Shrewsbury (SHR2) and was surprised to find out that not
only do they support Wireless but they have a DHCP server in that
    facility.

Any idea how we can find out what facilities support Wireless and DHCP?
If the facilities don't support Wireless, I can live with this as I'll
carry my own RoamAbout Access Point Bridge and just find an active tap.
However, I need to find out who support DHCP so I can obtain a local
    'ip' address for that facility.

    Facility	Wireless	DHCP
    IVO Yes Yes
    LJO Yes No

LKG supports both. An updated version of the table in .0 is:

    Facility	Wireless	DHCP
    IVO Yes Yes
    LJO Yes No
    LKG Yes Yes
    MKO No Yes
    PKO No No
    SHR Yes Yes

PKO has DHCP. An updated version of the table in .0 is:

    Facility	Wireless	DHCP
    IVO Yes Yes
    LJO Yes No
    LKG Yes Yes
    MKO No Yes
    PKO No Yes
    SHR Yes Yes

You can look at our CCS NT Web page for a list of all the sites
    with DHCP. http://www-ccs.wro.dec.com/NT/

Offhand I can tell you we have it at: MKO, NQO,
NIO, DAS, NYO, COP, ALF, CXO, WRO, TRO, LKG, TAY1, AKO,
PKO, MSO, OGO, MRO, and SHR3 and the SHR3 MCS CXO-SHR LAN.

ZKO, LEX, and TAY2 will be coming online soon. RCO, RCH, and
    KYO should be soon also.

I thought LJO was closing? DO we still have one or two builds and
approx. how many people are there? What business sits in LJO?

LJO2 supports DHCP for wireless and wired connectivity. I'm not sure
what your problem was but it works fine for us...

    appropriate notes or conferences appreciated...

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol == DHCP.

It hands out IP addresses to systems and tells them the rest of the
just as well (subnet mask, default route, name server, etc.).

SYstem gets a "lease" on the address and can renew the lease
    periodically.

Benefit: removes the hassle of configuring end nodes, more likely that
    they are properly configured.

Problems: won't do servers (cause most folks don't want their servers
switching IP addresses on them), breaks some security schemes (e.g. NFS
/etc/exports list), makes X-windows somewhat more difficult (you have
to discover your IP address in order to point an application back to
your screen rather than hardcoding the DNS name somewhere in a script).

We had meetings in the Cluster and Alpha Conference room. I booted my
pc and could NOT obtain an IP address. I was successfully able to
obtain an address in both MKO and SHR. Was there something missing in
a configuration parameter that I should look at?

When we just set up ISDN at our site (NT RAS PRI server with an Allegra
card, Windows for Workgroups pcs with US Robotics Sportster 128K cards
calling in), we tried to use DHCP and couldn't get it to work, so
we reverted to hardcoded IP addresses.

The individuals we displaced from the Alpha Conference room were using
their Wireless RoamAbout. Maybe just the DHCP server was down.

re .10: Your Domain ID and Beacon Key were probably not configured to
talk to our access points. Send mail to RDVAX::Help if you want the
    config info for LJO.

I believe that I left them to the default values of '1'. Thanks for
the suggestion. I won't be able to try it until our quarterly meeting
    in Q2.

Is that like 1+1=4 for NON-default values of '1'? Just curious... :)

Don't quite understand what you're illustrating. Here's the Properties
    and Values.

    Domain ID 1
    Encryption Enable OFF

Sort of like "2+2=5 for large values of 2".

Can someone tell me what WINS servers the DHCP scope in LJO is using?
Are they the CCS WINS servers?

4572.18RoamAbout sites and parameters.IROCZ::SCHWARTZMon Apr 29 1996 11:5614
    Hi,

NO facility should ever be using the defaults of 1 & 1. This is a
severe security issue! The Littleton/Maynard cluster have
standardized on a common Domain ID and Beacon key to allow users to
move between faclities. I know that MKO has at least one RoamAbout AP
running also using these same parameters and SHR is also using the same
    parameters.

Well I'm using 1 & 1, however, I had my own AP in MKO. In SHR I had
the same values set and was able to gain access to their network,
therefore, they must be using the same values? Couldn't gain access
there. Whom do we contact at these facilities to get these values so
when we visit there for meetings we can access the network?

What do you recommend we set these values at? Are there any corporate
    guidelines for these?

We're looking for DHCP servers NOT WINS, I believe they are different and
we're not using WINS anyways. Also, we need to know the values for:

    	Beacon Key ?
    	Domain ID ?
    	NWID ??

    Property: Value:
    Attribute Memory Size	8000
    Beacon Key 1
    Domain ID 1
    Encryption Enable OFF
    Encryption Key
    NWID 5080
    Roaming Enable ON
    Station Address
    Station Name pc433slc
    Windows 95 Flag 1

When you sent mail to [email protected] or RDVAX::HELP, as Kevin Pascucci
mentioned in .10, what did they say (they probably forwarded it to Kevin
for response)?

CCS stands for Connectivity and Computing Services, which is the name
the organization adopted in January 1996 when:
the GPS (Global Processing Services) and GT&NS (Global Telecommunications
and Networking Services) organizations merged into one.
GPS was previously known as CNS which stood for:
    Compute and Network Services.
