Hi Rai,
Please find the enclosed abstract of a project proposal. I'm going to send
this proposal to the British Research Council EPSRC to apply for funding.
But to increase the chance of getting it funded, I would need some letters
from industry to state that such a project is useful from their point of
view. If DEC is interested, what I need will be a letter mentioning their
opinion on the relevance and potential benefit of the research to their
business. Perhaps a half-man day per quarter of a year in reviewing the
progress and quality of the project. What they get in return will be free
access to the research output.
A quick feedback would be highly appreciated because the deadline for the
proposal submission is this mid May.
I'd appreciate your help if you could ask around in the company.
Regards,
Kecheng

Synchronous Collaborative Environment for Engineering Design
(SCEED)
a project proposal

Abstract:
This project aims at improving the efficiency and effectiveness of human
collaborative process of engineering design by providing a computer-based,
networked, and synchronous environment for the participants involved and
geographically distributed. In the industry a product development lifecycle
is normally a long and complex process and involves many individuals with
different responsibilities at different phases. Improvement of efficiency of
engineering design will shorten the lead time for a product development;
while enhancement of the effectiveness will uplift the quality of decision
making to enable the geographically dispersed participants to be involved at
the right time. Organisational Semiotics [ref], a theory to be adopted in
this research, suggests the issues of efficiency and effectiveness of
engineering design can be tackled on the basis of understanding of the
nature and characteristics of the signs to be produced and communicated.
These issues will be addressed in this project by providing a set of methods
and techniques for management of collaborative workflow and also by
integrating the workflow into an automated technological environment of CSCW.
CSCW (computer supported cooperative work), as a growing discipline,
provides principles and technical guidelines for developing a synchronous
collaborative environment for engineering design. Two technologies are
often found in CSCW projects and are particularly the key components in this
SCEED project. Multimedia technology will offer the capabilities of handling
text, voice, graphics, drawings and images. Networking will enable the
people involved (viz stakeholders) to participate in the process of design
from dispersed locations. To take advantage of these technologies available
to improve the productivity and quality of the product development, to
shorten the lead time for research and development, and therefore to achieve
a significant increase in economic terms have been a strong desire from the
industry. The novelty of this research lies in the extended scope of users
which includes not only the technical designers but also the service
engineers and top level managers. Another added value to the existing
technology is an integrated environment to provide a full range of
functionality such as telecommunication and networking, image capture,
synchronous screen drawing, distributed CAD (computer added design),
multimedia data manipulation, and management for design documents.

Dear Raj,
Thanks very much for putting so much effort in to send my message around in DEC.
The reply from Mr. Dutt gives me some encourage in the way that he thinks
the proposed project addresses the right problem. His comments are also useful!
By the way, please make sure people know that I'm not asking for their
serious commitment but only "moral" support, if they think the project
addresses the right issues. Hope there will be feedback.
I'll "talk" to you again later.
