| Digital plans April intro of servers primed for memory-hungry apps
By JEFF BLISS
Maynard, Mass.-Digital Equipment Corp. plans to roll out a new family of
midrange servers in April with huge amounts of RAM for running memory-hungry
mission-critical and multimedia applications, sources said.
The product line, code-named Rawhide, will be the first attempt to bring Very
Large Memory (VLM)-now the exclusive province of Digital's high-end Alpha
servers-to midrange machines, said sources familiar with the new products.
The servers, to be priced between $60,000 and $80,000, will offer a scaled-down
version of the VLM capabilities of the AlphaServer 8400 and 8200, better known
as the TurboLaser server line.
Robert Murphy, vice president of sales for Bay State Computer Group, a systems
and network integrator in Boston, said the list of features in Rawhide sounds
like an answer to resellers' requests for a less-powerful TurboLaser.
"You could literally run a whole database on [TurboLaser] memory," he said,
adding that most companies do not need that capacity. The standard Oracle
Corp. database implementation, for instance, requires 1 Gbyte of memory, he
said. TurboLaser machines offer up to 14 Gbytes of memory.
"[Rawhide] will give an upgrade path to accommodate higher memory requirements
at a lower-cost entry point," Murphy said.
That is important, considering that memory costs about $100,000 per Gbyte, said
Terry Shannon, editor of the Framingham, Mass.-based Shannon Knows DEC. "I think
Rawhide will be a killer product," Shannon said.
"I think where it will play-and play very strong-is in the SAP world, the
Oracle world and the more traditional data-warehousing products," Murphy said.
Digital officials would not say how much memory would be available on Rawhide
products. TurboLasers are powered by 12 64-bit Alpha chips; Rawhide servers
will include up to four Alpha CPUs, sources said.
The microprocessors will be contained in a drawer that will fit into several
configurations, such as pedestals, rack mounts or cabinets, sources said.
The fewer number of microprocessors will allow the new servers to run Windows
NT, which integrators said now does not scale well beyond four processors.
This mix of high-end and low-end features positions Rawhide between the
TurboLaser and the AlphaServer 2100 and 2000 products, better known as the
Sable line.
Sources said the Rawhide servers will be the first to feature the new Alpha
chip, the EV56, which at 0.35 micron and 2.2 volts will be smaller, faster and
use less power than the current EV5 Alpha, which is 0.5 micron and 3.3 volts.
The Rawhide chips will be between 300MHz and 400MHz, sources said.
The EV56 also will find its way into more powerful versions of the TurboLaser,
to be shipped in the third quarter, sources said. The high-end systems will
include chips up to 433MHz and will support up to 28 Gbytes of memory.
The imminent introduction of Rawhide, in the meantime, is whetting VARs'
appetites for Alpha-based systems. David Martel, president of TechPC, a VAR in
Manchester, N.H., said resellers attending Digital's Business Partner
Executive Seminar in Orlando, Fla., earlier this month were enthusiastic about
the product line. "Rawhide seemed to have a lot of buzz, a lot of excitement,"
he said.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Digital redefines the mid-range server market by introducing the latest
and greatest AlphaServer flagship challenger -- the AlphaServer 4100.
By continuing to drive Digital's leading 64-bit RISC technology down through
the product line, the AlphaServer 4100 elevates the standard for performance,
dependability, and economy in the mid-range open system server market.
AlphaServer 4100 systems offer many integral and unique features:
- Up to 4GB of memory, the first mid-range implementation of Digital's 64-bit
very large memory (VLM64) technology, brings the power and benefits of VLM
applications to customers at a very attractive mid-range price.
- Up to four of today's fastest Alpha 64-bit processors, beginning with 300MHz
and moving quickly to 400MHz in July.
- Powerful error-correcting 1.1GB/sec synchronous high-speed system bus,
speed-matched to each processor (of the same type), enabling it to grow
in bandwidth to match speed processor upgrades, like the 400MHz version.
- Two independent, very fast 64-bit PCI busses at 250MB/sec each, having a
peak capacity of 500MB/sec greatly increases sustained I/O bandwidth and
ensures balanced system performance, while taking advantage of
industry-standard PCI options.
- First implementation of unique System Drawer design makes it easier to
configure more flexible systems in meeting customers' future business and
technology needs where maximum power and capacity is important.
- Integral system management functions and support for N+1 power with no
restrictions.
Poised to explode the mid-range server market, the AlphaServer 4100 Model 5/300
features a 300-MHz CPU with 2MB on board cache, while the Model 5/300E features
a 300-MHz cacheless CPU. To take advantage of emerging EV5.6 Alpha technologies,
the Model 5/300 with 2MB cache can be upgraded to the AlphaServer 4100 5/400
Model featuring a 400-MHz CPU with 4MB cache, orderable now with delivery in
the July timeframe. The AlphaServer 4100 family supports Windows NT, Digital
UNIX, and OpenVMS operating systems in both pedestal and cabinet rackmountable
configurations.
Due to an exclusive System Drawer design, AlphaServer 4100 systems can be
configured and expanded easily to take advantage of unbounded CPU, memory
and I/O capabilities. This is a brand new concept in engineering design,
specifically devised to provide maximum configuration flexibility. A System
Drawer includes a maximum of 4 speed-matched processors of the same type,
up to 4GB of memory in any combination, 8 PCI slots, and up to three power
supplies. Everything but storage and peripherals is contained in the System
Drawer.
While pedestal systems support one System Drawer and up to three StorageWorks
shelves, cabinet rackmount systems support two System Drawers and up to six
StorageWorks shelves. Each drawer in the rackmount cabinet can run different
operating systems. For example, the first drawer can run Windows NT for NT
applications, while the second drawer runs Digital UNIX for UNIX applications
-- all in the same cabinet. The 4100 System Drawer is an ideal system building
block for rackmount configurations because it is designed to be installed in
cabinets using standard EIA or METRIC rails needing only 11.8 inches of vertical
space. For customers needing additional customization of AlphaServer 4100
rackmount cabinet systems, please contact your local CSS representative.
And, by eliminating any trade-off decisions for dedicated memory versus CPU
slots, the AlphaServer 4100 is the ideal platform for high-performance database
applications, as well as a host of general-purpose and emerging technical
and commercial applications.
BENEFITS
In response to the need for a more scalable server system for database
and technical applications in open office environments -- a more modular
server design that can be easily packaged and sold according to Distributor
and channel partner needs -- a more flexible system architecture that can be
optimally configured for a number of application-specific markets, Digital
designed the AlphaServer 4100 product line. As a result, the three most
important aspects of the AlphaServer 4100 product line are its scalability,
modularity and flexibility.
The cornerstone of the AlphaServer 4100 is its scalable, parallel systems
architecture design. The 1.1GB system bus connects quad processors with
access to 4GB of memory as well as the I/O subsystem. The bus is synchronously
tied to the clock rate (300MHz/400MHz) of the processors and memory. As the
clock speed of the processors increases, the bandwidth of the bus increases
and the latency to memory decreases. This allows the system to "speed match"
itself to growth in processor power. When customers add very fast processors
to 2GB or 4GB of memory with connection to all the 64-bit I/O components to
take advantage of it, customers get an enormous boost in database and
application performance.
It is this design that allows AlphaServer 4100 systems to offer a level of
modularity that is unsurpassed in the server segment of Digital's business.
CPU chip speeds (400MHz, 300MHz), cache sizes (4MB, 2MB, cacheless), quad CPU
SMP support, mulitple independent PCI buses, and no trade-offs between CPUs,
memory modules, N+1, and I/O all combine to enable Digital to build a variety
of systems to meet specific market application needs, and to provide server
components to channel partners who prefer to design their own configurations.
With modularity that extends beyond server components and subsystems,
AlphaServer 4100 Cabinet systems can expand to support two, 4-way System
Drawers for an 8 processor SMP powerhouse.
Historically, Digital has always built "well balanced" systems in terms of CPU,
memory, and I/O performance for maximum flexibility. It is the balance of high
memory bandwidth, low memory latencies, and quad-processor configurations in
combination with high bandwith I/O that allows the AlphaServer family to achieve
high performance at a low cost. For example, the advantage of a cacheless system
(best suited for file, technical, or web server applications) will be that it
will provide about the same level of performance as a cached system (best suited
for large database applications) but for significantly less cost. Plus, the
level of flexibility in choosing the CPU, memory, and I/O components enables
channel partners to customize the right system for specific applications. This
allows Digital to hit the "sweet spot" in the mid-range server market.
Without a doubt, the advanced technology of the AlphServer 4100 provides the
best performance and the best value for enterprise-class applications. The
overall system and drawer design is engineered for unrestricted growth and
capacity, protecting your investment now while providing a clear upgrade path
to the benefits of EV5.6 and beyond technologies. The AlphaServer 4100, the
foundation for mission-critical applications, is clearly an enterprise solution
wrapped in a mid-range package.
COMPETITION
The AlphaServer 4100 is designed to continue the outstanding success
and customer acceptance of the AlphaServer 2100, and at the same time,
expand the mid-range server horizons to close the gap between our
powerful 8200 enterprise server and the mid-range 2100. The AlphaServer
4100 will give customers new choices and better value, delivering 30
to 40% faster processors, two to four times the memory capacity, plus
a dramatically improved system design that yeilds a 400% increase in
I/O bandwidth. These performance gains, along with new AlphaServer 4100
features are key differentiators in positioning the product well ahead
of Digital's competitors.
VLM is the key differentiator, and should remain so, as most competitors
top out at 2GB main memory. Leverage the subsequent performance gains as
much as possible.
The 4100's primary competition is HP's 9000 K420, Sun's SS1000E (expect this
to be replaced in late April with an UltraSPARC version), IBM's RS6000 J30,
and Compaq Proliant 4500 Mod 2 P5/166 (soon to be upgraded with Pentium Pro
CPU's). See attached charts.
Although both HP and Sun have 64 bit processors in product or field test,
their 64 bit operating systems are only "promised" for later in the year.
Troublesome transitions are ahead for end users of HPUX (HP unix) and Solaris
(Sun's unix) resulting in delayed implementations and costly downtime. HP
users face a second transition with the fruitition of the Intel/HP allaince
"Tahoe" architecture.
The 4100's open I/O architecture (PCI/64 bus) continues Digital's advantage over
"closed" I/O implementation from Sun (S-bus, XD-bus and UPA UltraSPARC Port
Architecture) and HP (HSC & HP-PB). These I/O buses also inhibit both
competitors from providing NT solutions on their Unix platforms. Intelligence
reports indicate both HP & Sun have PCI-based I/O on the drawing board.
Compaq's Proliant 4500 only offers EISA bus. However, expect a migration of the
1500's PCI bus upward into the new product offerings when the P6 models are
introduced.
