4549.0. "ADSM" by DV780::DIFIORE () Tue Apr 16 1996 14:54

Does anyone have any info on ADSM on Digital UNIX. It is a combination
multivendor NSR and HSM from IBM.

    Thanks

There's some references within this doc to look. This might be a
StorageWorks value-added layered product so you might need to contact
    them.

                  Digital DLT Tape Subsystem Family
to be Supported by IBM ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager

Increased Flexibility and Reliability for Desktop and Workstation
                   Users in Networked Environments

MAYNARD, Mass., March 20, 1996 -- Digital Equipment Corporation
today announced that its DLT tape subsystems family will be
supported by ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager (ADSM) for AIX,
Version 2.1. IBM's ADSM software provides automated distributed
storage management, including back-up and recovery, archiving, and
hierarchical storage management (HSM) in heterogeneous computing
environments with desktop to data center scalability.

"By providing support for StorageWorks we are visibly
broadening the choice of storage subsystems for our ADSM customers"
said Nora Denzel, director of storage software products, IBM Storage
Systems Division.

ADSM software support will be available in the second quarter
of 1996 by PTF update for Digital's TZ87, TZ87N, TZ875, TZ877,
TZ877N, SXTL-Bn, TZ88, TZ885, TZ887 and SWXTL-Cn Tape Drive Families
on the AIX platform. IBM plans also to extend this support of
Digital's DLT loaders on additional ADSM servers including OS/2 and
SUN.

Digital's DLT loaders offer unattended backup with industry-
leading capacities (20GB or 40GB per cartridge with compression) and
high performance (up to 7GB/hour) with up to 2.5 MB/s sustained data
transfer rate. Package options include the tabletop and
StorageWorks building block drives, 5 and 7 cartridge loaders for
Digital systems and other leading system manufacturers.

"IBM's support of StorageWorks will enable AIX users to take
full advantage of the modular, scalable design of the StorageWorks
product line when using ADSM storage management software," said
Robert Rennick, vice president and general manager, Storage Business
Unit, Digital Equipment Corporation.

StorageWorks products are available on multiple operating
systems and hardware platforms, including Digital, Hewlett-Packard,
IBM and Sun servers and workstations, and Novell and Windows NT
environments. Products are available through DECdirect, Digital's
business partners and local Digital sales offices. For more
information about Digital's complete line of hardware and software
products, call 1-800-STORWORK (1-800-786-7967) or visit

Digital Equipment Corporation is the world's leader in open
client/server solutions from personal computers to integrated
worldwide information systems. Digital's Intel and Alpha platforms,
storage, networking, software and services, together with industry-
focused solutions from business partners, help organizations compete

    Look at :

    	http://www-i.almaden.ibm.com/storage/software/adsm/adsmhome.

Complete description of what ADSM is....however, you will be hard
pressed to find anything on Digital UNIX Client. The product just
came out for Digital UNIX clients on March 23. The home page has yet
been updated to reflect this. There is an FTP site with Digital UNIX
    docs in it at: ftp://198.80.6.2/adsm/fixes/v2r1/dec/digitalunix

    Hope this helps!

I'm pretty sure that CSS is looking into porting ADSM to Digital UNIX. I think
the contact is Brian Keaveny. At last check, they were working on the contract,
not the port.

Just got the new IBM RS/6000 product catalog in the mail, and
lo & behold, on the pages for the ADSM/ADSTAR products, DIGITAL
UNIX shows up as a supported client, joining ULTRIX.

VMS ADSM client is in Beta at the moment as well.

re .4 and .5

The operative word is "CLIENT".

Now what might be a good idea is to port ADSM server onto OpenVMS and Digital
Unix!! It will probably upset the NSR folks out at DECwest but if our customers
want it what else can we do??
