| There are several good servers available. www.openvms.digital.com is running
Process Software's Purveyor, which is a good commercial-quality server.
There are some freeware servers available as well. I understand that
Netscape's server will be available on the OpenVMS Internet Toolkit that is
coming soon. I run Purveyor on my own system and like it a lot.

WWW.datamation.com for the article "Who wins the Web Server Shootout?
According to their chart on page 50, Process' Purveyor wins over
Microsoft and Netscape!
And yes, OpenVMS is alive and well...and bringing in SIGNIFICANT
revenue to this Corporation.

| Yeah - next thing we know the corporation will announce that we've formed
a strategic alliance with Microsoft to replace all OpenVMS systems with
"Microsoft BOB".

| Is Purveyor the only one that will be available for OpenVMS VAX?
Will Netscape be available for OpenVMS VAX?
Thanks...

| My understanding is that the Netscape tools are supposed to be provided for
both VAX and Alpha.
There are also freeware servers that run on VAX.

| Contact Susan Denham (STAR::DENHAM) for the details, but the
OpenVMS Product Suite should be generally available around July.
It should have Netscape Navigator (w/o Java but with Javascript),
Spyglass Enhanced Mosaic, Netscape Communications Server, Netscape
Commerce Server, Purveyor, Digital Firewall for OpenVMS, Netscape
Proxy Server, Web interface to VTX, Web interface to VMS Help, Web
interface to system monitoring, some conversion tools and about 30
freeware packages. Navigator and Spyglass should be licenced
under DW-Motif but the other commercial products will require a
license. There should be trial PAKs for Purveyor and the Web VTX
tool.

Netscape is supposed to work on VAX and Alpha, I haven't
seen a VAX version but have seen the Alphaproto's
I have also seen rumors of another commerical server that
works on openvms (but I can't find where I read about it).

have Java. JavaScript, yes.

4546.15 | Where's the kit? | NWD002::BAYLEY::Randall_do | | Wed Apr 24 1996 14:58 | 12 |
| Was the original question, what would customers buy or get from
Digital to build a Web server for VMS. Customers would probably
like a kit just like the Digital Internet software kit for Unix. The
advantage is to have a complete set of software needed, not
just a Netscape or Purveyor.
This is the kit referred to that will (maybe) be out in July. At Decus
in December, we said April. There is a lot of demand, it's not
expensive, we could sell a lot of them. So why the delay?

| Is there a search engine like Alta Vista also available for OpenVMS
VAX? My customer is looking into building an intranet and a search
engine needs to be incorporated into the plan...
