4540.0. "Storageworks HS241 serve system disk to Alpha 8200s?" by DYPSS1::DYSERT (Barry - Custom Software Development) Thu Apr 11 1996 15:48

I posted this to the ASK_SSAG conference early yesterday and have
gotten no replies. I apologize for posting it here, but actually it is
going to be a *big* business issue if it doesn't get resolved very
soon. If you read the next to the last paragraph you'll see that we're
on the verge of closing a multi-million dollar piece of business - iff
we can get this to work. This business is literally ours to lose; I'm
trying to do all I can to make sure we don't lose it!

We've been talking to everyone we can thing of (including Colorado
support) and we still have not been able to boot our 8200s from a
common system disk served out of the HS241. If there is any technical
guru reading this note, please let me hear from you: I need to know if
this configuration is supposed to work, and if so, what I need to do to
get it there. Otherwise, could someone please direct me to someone high
enough to care that we might be losing this business for lack of
    adequate documentation/support.

    Thanks!

Note 5503.0 Storageworks HS241 serve system disk to Alpha 8200s? No replies
DYPSS1::DYSERT "Barry - Custom Software Development" 40 lines  10-APR-1996 06:26
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am heavily involved in helping a customer migrate their applications
from a VAXcluster to an Alpha cluster running OpenVMS V6.2 and using
Storageworks technology. The idea they are pursuing, and which we are
trying to get to work, comprises 4 Alpha 8200s, a Gigaswitch, and two
HS241s each of which houses dozens of RZ29s.

Unfortunately, the customer has acquired this system in pieces from an
OEM and it has not come with adequate documentation. After lots of
trial and error and talking with Colorado I now understand that the
Alpha servers in the HS241 are supposed to be configured as cluster
members with the 8200s and serve the RZ29s to the 8200s.

The current question is how to use one of these RZ29s to be the system
disk that will be shared among the 8200s. I was told that we need to
run the CLUSTER_CONFIG_LAN.COM procedure on the server and define the
8200s to it. Then we're supposed to boot the 8200s off the FDDI device
and the server will magically process the "satellite" boot request (via
    MOM?).

The problem is that after going through all this the 8200 times out
waiting for the server to answer him. Assuming that my understanding is
correct (which I'm not yet convinced that it is), and that what we are
wanting to do is even possible (ditto), then could someone please tell
me what I need to do to get this to work? Do I need to set some
parameters somewhere so that the timeout doesn't occur? Perhaps I
didn't do the cluster config properly? Or must I fool with LANCP?

I'll post whatever info anyone might need to help me diagnose the
problem. I must emphasize that this customer (the gov't) has all this
stuff *on loan* to evaluate whether it will work. We're obviously
talking about millions of dollars worth of hardware and services (to
help them migrate their software). It is very important that we get
this thing working asap - they are going to obligate their money within
    the next few weeks!

Without documentation I'm shooting in the dark, and I don't have the
luxury of time to keep shooting blanks. Any help that anyone can give
me will be greatly appreciated (including pointers to books). Thank you!

4540.1What's your config?DECIDE::MOFFITTThu Apr 11 1996 16:2019
A quick look in the OpenVMS Cluster Software SPD (29.78.12) shows the
following caveats when booting an 8200/8400 into a cluster:

Note 2 - Rack-mount AlphaServer 8200 configurations with CIXCD, KFMSB, and
DEMFA capability are available from Digital CSS.

Note 4 - Each "Yes+Sat" means that this CPU is supported on this interconnect
and can be booted as a satellite node over this interconnect.

Note 5 - Using DEMFA only

Note 3 aplies to the AlphaServer 8200s in general, notes 4 and 5 apply when an
8200 is to be booted across an FDDI.

Bottom line. If you're trying to boot an 8200 (or an 8400 for that matter),
the only supported FDDI adapter is the DEMFA - NOT the DEFPA.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the quick replies (can you tell that quickness is good?)! As
Tim guessed, we have DEFPAs. It seems that our most viable solultion is
to replace them with DEMFAs. (We do have KFTIAs and KFTHAs.)

I have some phone calls to make (someone else contacted me off line -
thanks), and if I'm still not sure I'll drop into the conference
    mentioned in .-1.

Thank you very much. I'm fairly optimistic now.

4540.4boot over 10baseT..switch to FDDILANDO::MUZZIThu Apr 11 1996 18:1215

DEMFAs are XMI devices...the XMI isn't supported on the 8200...unless
you goto CSS for a custom. Even though the SPD doesn't say that the
tulip (DE435/10basaeT on the ITIOP) is a supported device...you can boot
over it... Once the system is boot you can switch over to FDDI. My
understanding of this problem is that it's an open IPMT case (is that
correct), it is/was being worked...the 8200/8400 console had some problems
with booting the DEFPA/DEFPZ...and VMS doesn't have a DEFPA/DEFPZ boot
    driver.

    	Hope that this helps..

4540.5And you thought this would be easy....MSDOA::GUIDRYGhost RiderFri Apr 12 1996 15:4048
Too bad you're not using 2100's. I've had the same problem with a similar
cluster built around 2100's and an HS241. The storage folks would like to treat
this thing as a black box, but the embedded Alpha 1000's participate as full
OpenVMS cluster members and this complicates the configuration.

THe problem you're having is that the OpenVMS secondary bootstrap doesn't
support the DEFPA (though OpenVMS itself does) , so your MOP boot fails.

The official answer I got on booting via the DEFPA follows:

___________________________________________________________________________

FDDI boot support:

AlphaServer 2100
   OpenVMS V6.2 DEFEA only
OpenVMS V6.2-1H2 DEFEA or DEFPA only
   OpenVMS V7.0 DEFEA only

Neither the AlphaServer 1000 (Mikasa) or AlphaServer 1000a (Noritake)
will boot over FDDI for any current VMS version. Note that
the AlphaServer 1000 will support booting other systems
over FDDI.

The current list of systems which will boot over FDDI
(from the V6.2-1H2 Cluster SPD) is:

   AlphaServer 8200, 8400 (DEMFA only)
   DEC 7000, 10000 (DEMFA only)
   DEC 3000 (DEFTA only)
   AlphaServer 2100, 2100a (see above)

______________________________________________________________________________

There is another solution. Put EISA Ethernet cards in the Alpha 1000's in the
HS241 (Shhh - they'll tell you it's unsupported). Hook Ethernet between the
8200's and the new Ethernet cards in the Alpha 1000's. Now you can MOP boot
across Ethernet. OpenVMS will path switch to the FDDI link when it comes up.

Of course the 8200's become satellite Cluster members. The 1000's MSCP serve
the disks to the cluster.

You might also want to drop a note to the HS241 product manager (I don't have
his name handy).

Good Luck

Have you tried the VMScluster & 8200 notesfiles ?

Have you contacted the StorageWorks Technical support group ?
               FDDI servers are their product.

Also, you might like to speak to the VMS product manager for direction,
    (Nick Carr).

Thanks for the additional pointers, Tony. We're contacting everyone we
can thing of. We'll get to the bottom of this eventually.
