| Why don't you go direct to the source ??? Contact Verell (STAR::) Boaen, the
Cluster Communications Architect. He was there "at the beginning". Also
clarify what you mean by clustering. We had CI connectivity to HSCs back in the
VMS v3.7 / V4.0 days. I don't remember when the Lock Manager first came along.
Most people consider that to be the advent of "real" cluster functionality.

4481.2 | CI + DLM = clustering (?) | MSDOA::HICKST | | Thu Mar 14 1996 11:37 | 9 |
| I think we're talking about CI communications with Distributed Lock
Manager for multiple host resource access.
Is that clear?
I askied here 'cuz I thought it pertinent to Digital history and
culture, and of general interest to Digits.
How's about a second try?

| Then you're talking about the VAX/VMS V4.0 introduction, which was in
December, 1984.

You might rather contact Dave COOKIE::THIEL who was here when it all
happened anc can give you chapter and verse for the who shooting
match including when the "partial" cluster support was released in the
late V3.x (.7?) time frame.

4481.6 | VAXcluster at Spring DECUS '83 | SALES::CARR | Sam Carr DTN 244-7224 AKO2-2/D05 | Thu Mar 14 1996 14:43 | 8 |
| This string reminded me that a VAXcluster of two VAX-11/780s and two
HSC50s appeared at Spring DECUS '83 in St. Louis. Dick Mahoney and
Trevor Kempsell were the primary contacts there. This may have been
the first showing after announcement, but I don't know what software
features were in place at that time.
The dates were May 23-27, 1983. Hope this helps as a timestamp.

That was as close to a carnival worker as I ever want to come.

| VMS V3.3 was the 1st version to support the CI780, the CI, and the HSC50 device.
That was not a cluster in the sence of what we today call a VMS cluster, but it
was more of a cluster than some of today's Unix and NT cluster implementations.
The 1st version to have distributed lock manager, what we today call VMS cluster
was V4.0. SSB version 4.0 was built 15-SEP-1984.
