4475.1 | WATN is probably the most cost-effective, but ... | TWOTOO::COLE | Somedays the bear, somedays the beehive. | Mon Mar 11 1996 15:41 | 15 |
| ... you need to know the username/password for your site. Your local CNS
support will have it. Here in the field, we have an automated voice-message ser-
vice that informs us of the local dial-in server passwords, WATN info, etc.
Anyway, according to the last listing I was able to pull from somewhere
I can't remember(!), Champaign/Urbana's WATN access phone is:
2367 CHAMPAIGN/URBANA IL USA LOW B B C 217/344-3400 Y
|
which translates to a 2400 baud connection, max - - - -
VTX has several pages on WATN, including an 800 # that will find an
access point for you, based on area code.
Good luck.

| If you have (or can get) and MCI card, you can dial directly into the DTN, and
from there hop over to whatever server (terminal. SLIP. etc) you want.

4475.3 | Possible Digital sites in the area | AKOCOA::KGREENE | | Mon Mar 11 1996 16:56 | 10 |
| RE: .0
As far as local Digital facilities, there are/were 2 facilities in the
area. According to the December 1993 Digital Telephone directory, there
is a sales/servicenter in Champaign (CIO), as well as a servicenter in
Springfield (SRO). Both are in area code 217.

There may still be a servicenter in Champaign Illinois, but the Sales Office
closed last year, when we "laid off" the University of Illinois as a
customer :-). The nearest Sales Office is Peoria, IL, and then
Indianapolis, IN.

WATN accounts work on TYMNET.... on a DEC LAT do a "C WATN"
they type "HELP" as your password... It will give you the up to date
listing of access numbers by state...

4475.7 | ONLY "THE KENNEL" | ACISS2::ZANGERLE | | Tue Mar 12 1996 18:00 | 7 |
| Sorry , there is only WATN. The only facility left is "the kennel".
NOT for the faint of heart, "the kennel" is a parts location for MCS.
Peoria,IL is the closest "network connection" and sales/service office.

4475.8 | It's down to WATN or the Tunnel | SEGAD3::STAYLOR | | Wed Mar 13 1996 11:17 | 10 |
| Well, it looks like either WATN or the Internet Tunnel.
I've got sufficient info (and help) to pursue these two possibilities.
The internet tunnel looks like a really neat concept, so I'm planning
on trying that first. Barring that, there's always the 9600 baud
connection via WATN.
Thanks for all the responses! (both notes and Email)

4475.9 | Tunnel is slow for telnet | DECAGE::HESS | Stu - DTN 344-7241 | Wed Mar 13 1996 11:25 | 8 |
| Hi,
We are using the Internet Tunnel where I am. It works great for
surfing the internal Digital Internet. If you were planning to telnet
to internal sites and log on the Tunnel is pretty slow. You will end
up waiting for the system to respond back to what you are typing. It
does work though and it is great for ftp also.

4475.10 | DEC's internal network might be the problem. | DELNI::WALSH | | Wed Mar 13 1996 20:49 | 15 |
| Where are you tunneling into. If you are coming in through Mopang and
then back into the company, you are seeing alot of slow down because of
the Digital Network. There is a new server coming on at Dascomb road.
This server is right on the company backbone and is quite a bit faster.
The best solution is to attempt to get you building to join the
internet and put a tunnel server at your site. I am tunneled in right
now through Dascomb road and am getting very good response on telnet.
Also you want to look at the Internet provider that you are using,
the further you are away from the MCI backbone of the internet , the
worse response you will get. Our group was using Ultranet but found
that Tiac was closer to the backbone. So shop around for a good
Internet provider.

| Actually I am at a customers site, GE, tunneling into Mopang. Some
days are a lot better than others. Yesterday I got pretty good
response. I think the slowdown has to do with a combination of both
Digitals and GE's nets.
