Well the Q3 DVN was shown yesterday in the site in England (SBP) that i work in!
Not very well attended! Nice overview of the chip plant at Hudson, Now i known
a bit about "FAB 6" that i keep hearing about (Obviously nothing todo with
Thunderbirds!!) Bob as always is a good speaker, talked about how wonderful
Digital is at all these things (cut to slide containing list of things we do
weell) and when asked "If Digital is doing so well why arent we all getting BIG
pay rises"?? answered "well there just isnt enough money in the pot yet! but
keep hoping! and if you threaten to leave you might get more to stay on!!!"

Otherwise it was the same old stuff, no wonder it wasnt very well attended!

Well, what *DOES* the "F.A.B." they say in the Thunderbirds
    really mean?

It does not mean anything.

Oh goodie - a computer dweeb 60's TV series rathole ......

F.A.B. as pronounced by Lady Penelope means "fab". It is a "scene"
joke with 2 levels of indirection. You have to know a little
about Gerry & Sylvia Anderson and to have dated a Sloane Ranger type to
really get it. It is really innocuous but under the Thunderbird
code of honour, I cannot reveal it (unless of course someone wants
to trade the meaning of OFWAMI :-)

Now, back to your regularly scheduled Q3 forum...

FAB and the meaning thereof:-. The subject of much debate during my
college years. We concluded it came from the FAB 4 - the Beatles, who were
very popular at the time of Thunderbirds. Therefore, FAB is probably short
    for the word FABULAS.

"10. What does "F.A.B." stand for?

"Perhaps the most frequently asked question by new THUNDERBIRDS
fans, the definitive answer came from Sylvia Anderson herself
during her promotional tour for her book YES, M'LADY. According to
    	Sylvia, F.A.B. stands for...

    	"...absolutely nothing.

"It was something they made up on the spur of the moment during a
writing session, Sylvia says, and it was never intended to stand for
anything other than to spell out the letters of a popular British slang
word--"fab"--during that era. Many people have attempted to find other
meanings ("Filed, Actioned, Briefed", "Fine--Acknowledge Broadcast"),
but it never meant anything other than "fabulous" "

    Re .1

    >>and if you threaten to leave you might get more to stay on!!!"

That's always amazed me. Someone finds a job elsewhere for more $$,
gives his/her notice and then the boss comes out with a counter offer.

I have a friend who just went through that in another company. The
external offer was substantially more and her boss was ready to counter
offer with even more. In effect, they admitted she worth a lot more
than what she was being payed. She alerted them of this fact and then
turned down the counter offer as a matter of principle.

What's the mindset? (1) Pay someone as little as possible, just enough to
keep them happy enough to stay? (2) Pay someone what they're worth?
If they get offered more from outside, then you can't match because
they're not worth that much to you.

Probably a function of both as well as a function of the times.

I didn't hear the forum. If this is the true attitude at the top
level of management it strikes me as being terribly naive. I think that
a manager that (even jokingly) encourages people to bail as soon as a
better offer comes along fosters disloyalty to the company and mistrust.

Personally, I try to make work more fun for me and for those around me.
I have intense loyalty and trust with people in the buildings I work in.
Perhaps some in top management would think me a fool for not bailing for
better offers. Maybe I am. But, they would be even more foolish if they
didn't work to keep a fool like me. The alternative for them is to have
to find a more expensive and less loyal fool to replace me.

As if laying off or selling off half the company hadn't accomplished
    that task already!

I guess I'm assuming that management that has laid off folks will try
to do some kind of damage control to keep and encourage the survivors.
It's one thing to let folks go. It's another to encourage the
    survivors to bail, too.

Actually, I've been working for Digital a bit more than a week. Coming
up soon on my 10-year anniversary. During my career I've also worked
for TI, Mostek and others. I *do* look out for myself. One of the
ways I look out for myself is to work for competent management. And,
that's the reason I commented in the first place. My direct management
seems competent to me. They demonstrate they want to keep talent here.
