4463.0. "No DEC PCs at COMPUSA?" by NCMAIL::SAWKENR () Tue Mar 05 1996 08:51

I went to COMPUSA and Computer City in Roch. NY and saw no DEC (or IBM)
    computers??

Two weeks ago there were 3 to 4 DEC systems on display and
the normal 4 to 5 display stacks of system and monitor boxes.

Now there is loads of COMPAQ and AST and COMPUSA own system.

    What happen ?

Digital exited the HOME PC market a few months ago. The only Digital
PCs you will see anywhere are those designed for the business market.

The wisdom of this has been discused elsewhere in this notesfile.

There was an interesting article in the WSJ (Web version) today.

Apparently the $10 off our stock is due to the 'Corporate PC buyer'
deferring purchases until later this year. Meanwhile the home PC buyer
is still on a buying spree.

We just couldn't have picked a better time to bail out of the home pc market.

4463.3Lots at Circuit CityNEMAIL::GEISDiane Ciuffetti Geis, 238-4992Tue Mar 05 1996 13:0714

Interesting...we were in the Circuit City in Manchester, NH, over
the past weekend and there were several Starion's prominently
    	displayed.

We weren't looking for a PC at the time, but it appeared that the
store was having a sale on PC's in general, and there were a number
    	of people looking at Starions.

Being a good doobie, I didn't mention that these were the last
members of the Starion line. :-)

Last time we talked with the PCBU this is the message we got and it's
    now in FINE print:

... Starions were sold through retailers and Venturis models were sold
through VARs and Distributors. Venturis will now be sold through both
    commerical and consumer channels. ...

    					Digital Age/ March 1996 pg. 13

I hope this is the message so that Digital still has named recognization
    in the consumer market.

Saw two 9xx Starions in Circuit City in Mission Viejo, California last
night. Seems to be some availability.

CompUSA has not been selling much of anything of ours recently. It makes me
wonder for how much longer we'll have the employee discount there.
Other outlets have been advertising and displaying the Starion systems -
while they last.

But....it's mentioned..."limited to stock on hand".

I saw a TV ad over the weekend for CompUSA advertising a PC and
mentioning they had other PCs from Compaq, IBM, Packard Bell, and
Digital (among others) - even had our logo put up on the screen. First
time I've seen that in any ad from a retailer.

Just got a TigerDirect catalog in the mail last night that has an
"over-cover" advertising their network server solutions staring Digital.

Lead roles by Digital Prioris ZX $11K to $21K and Digital Prioris HX
between $10K and $21K. Also the Prioris XL and LX for they dyslexic from
  $2.7K to $7.2K and $2.5K to $4K respectively.

All the server software by Digital you could want.

Well, this isn't an ad in a flyer, but I thought it was prety cool...

My sons were watching World Cup men's downhill skiing this past Sunday, and
they noted that the leader (Kjus?) had "digital[logo] PC" (in the
proper colors) displayed on his left shoulder.

My local CompUSA no longer sells Digital anything, either - not even a
printer cartridge to be found. Starions in evidence at Circuit City
and Incredible Universe in AZ area. The best models, however, are out
of stock at IU, with only the top and bottom of the line available.

IU is currently pushing the PBs, of course, with Acer running second.
    Ugh.

4463.17Nice Starion display at Lechmere, NashuaICS::MORRISEYFri Mar 15 1996 11:268

Lechmere in Nashua had 4 Starion models up and running on display
last evening, from the 910 to the 960, all with monitors running a
nice little 'attention getter' ad thing. Each model had a 'tear sheet'
of informaton about the model. 'Best display' of any manufacturer
     in the department.

Most people were taking the information sheet for the 960 model.
