4447.0. "Why is our web page so pathetically slow?" by HELIX::WELLCOME (Steve Wellcome MRO1-1/L31 Pole HJ33) Tue Feb 27 1996 11:49

I've just been trying to access www.digital.com to look up some
information. The response time is, in a word, ***PATHETIC***.
Netscape has been sitting here at least 15 minutes by the
clock loading the InfoCenters directory page.

Is this just because I'm "internal," and our real customers outside
get better response, or is this actually the way it looks to the
outside world? If it is, then I'd say it better change -- fast.
Any customer who goes through a delay like this is going to be
singularly underwhelmed by Digital's ability to do client/server
computing. I can access Intel, HP, CompUSA, etc., with little or no
delay. Why are we running our web page at a speed that reminds me
    of an ASR-33 Teletype?

From what I have seen and been told, it's not that the
external servers are giving us lower priority, and it's not
that the gateways or their proxy servers are overloaded, but
it's that our internal network is *really poor* in many
places, and that probably includes between where you are and
        your chosen gateway.

Hi Steve. I tried just now and got the info center directory in under
    10 seconds.

As I understand it ... there are 2 only "doors" for the entire company
to get out on the internet. As such, if several hundred people attempt
to access the internet (via Netscape) at the same time, response is
    going to be VERY slow.

Go to http://ibgmail.ljo.dec.com/sdk/ for internal software kits
(Netscape releases can be found under either the Released Software
Kits if you like stable or Field Test if you like updating
    periodically.

Obviously, you need a browser to get a browser this way, but Lynx
isn't hard to get if you're otherwise bereft.
