4422.0. "DCU orders cash for bonuses?" by ASDG::FAY () Wed Feb 14 1996 13:33

    	Has anyone heard that the DCU was told by corporate to order
    	more money this week to cover some kind of bonus to be paid
    	to all employees?

I don't quite see why DCU would be involved or why they would need to
"order more money", if such a thing were to happen.

    HAHA!

    Hey! If it helps the rumor, my customer is printing millions of new
    dollar bills, in every denomination, and stamping millions of coins, in
    all denominations *EVERY* DAY!

    So we are all going to be well off.

    I don't suppose this rumor could be in some mangled way connected to
    the bonus dividend that DCU recently posted to members' accounts...

4422.4But..ASDG::FAYWed Feb 14 1996 13:564
    	If we are all getting a bonus then the DCU would need
    	extra cash to cover the checks, that makes sense. And
    	if DEC told the DCU to have extra cash on hand this week
    	to cover the extra pay...
4422.5MCS BonusSCAMP::SCHULTZWed Feb 14 1996 14:025
    This probably has to do with the Success Sharing bonus that MCS is
    giving in tomorrow's paycheck. It's supposed to be .075 of one percent
    of base pay.

    Linda
4422.6ASDG::FAYWed Feb 14 1996 14:315
    Is the MCS Success Sharing bonus going to all employee's?
    Or is it just for that group?

    Also, the DCU wouldn't need DEC to tell it to get more money on
    hand for a dividend that the DCU was paying.
4422.7Just To MCSSCAMP::SCHULTZWed Feb 14 1996 14:584
    The way I understand it, the bonus is being paid to MCS employees (with
    at least 3 months of being in MCS) to acknowledge meeting Q2 goals.

    Linda
4422.8.075 of what ?MKOTS3::FLATHERSWed Feb 14 1996 15:249
          Is that .075 of one percent ?

       or just decimal .075 x base pay = bonus ?

       If it's the former,,,, I don't think the DCU will require any
     extra cash on hand   :^)

4422.13probably something like thisALFAXP::M_HYDEFrom the laboratory of Dr. JekyllWed Feb 14 1996 16:1810
Hey DCU, MCS SuccessShare awards will be in tomorrow's
paychecks.

Many MCS people have direct deposit to DCU.

Many of those people will probably want to stop by DCU
to get the bonus money out in cash.

So, it would be a good idea to have some extra cash on hand
in the branches.
4422.14Success, or is it failure?FSAEUR::ROEThu Feb 15 1996 08:373
    If MCS is getting a success award, why are MCS people being layed off?
    Maybe DCU needs to have move cash on hand so that these people may
    withdraw their life savings.
4422.15MAIL1::CRANEThu Feb 15 1996 08:441
    Guess it has to do with what district you support.
4422.16Pay for past performance ... Layoff for futureWMOIS::SMITH_LESJazz never gives me the BluesThu Feb 15 1996 08:475
    The way I heard it ... MCS made a commitment to provide success sharing
    based on meeting specified performance goals (which were met). The
    layoffs are part of an expenditure reduction based on projected Q3 and
    Q4 numbers.

4422.17TLE::REAGANAll of this chaos makes perfect senseThu Feb 15 1996 09:3114
    All of this doesn't sound likely...

    Most folks direct deposit.

    Most folks get their cash from ATM machines (who wants to stand in
    line?).

    Most ATM machines are well stocked (especially with the weekend coming
    up).

    Even if somebody got a "large" bonus, I doubt they'll get it all in
    cash all at once...

    Nope, They didn`t make the project numbers for q1, q2 but were at 103%.
    They didn`t make the projected numbers so henseforth the head count
    reduction.

    The Success Share payout for .75% (3/4 of 1 percent) is NOT going to
    break DCU.
    The example they gave was:

    On a salary of 40K,  .0075 X $40,000.00=$300 less normal weekly
    deductions.

    Maybe instead of extra cash, they should just have some extra rolls of
    quarters on hand....

    For the majority of the people in the company who will receive a bonus
    on this formula..

    	.0000 * 40,000 = $0  :^(

    the $300 doesn't seem so bad after all! They are also getting .0225
    in August = .0225 * 40,000 = $900.

    so how much does MCS save on its books if it lays off people

    re .24

    good question... THAT's how it works.....we lay off everyone who
    isn't tied down, and the survivors get to "Share the Success".....
    then we hire them all back as contractors with a nice pay increase
    and lay them all off again for next FY....
    THIS is what they mean by variable work force and variable
    compensation....
    of course this also leads to variable customer satisfation and
    variable stock prices....... 8-}

Cash?  What is cash?

Anybody who carries around more than $200 cash is probably up to illegal
activites, according to the Federal goverenment. If you buy an airline
ticket for cash you are sure to arrouse the Feds. Most state allow large
sums a cash to be held by the police until you can prove ownership.

    In the U.S., the bonus was paid today. I believe the layoffs start
    Monday. So in this case, nothing was saved.

Cathy, bingo! That is exactly my understanding of how the new American
variable workforce is handled. Everywhere I turn there's another
article about this "new" workforce. liesl
4422.30the roar of the greasepaint....COOKIE::KELSEYMercenary weed whackerFri Feb 16 1996 13:567
    It'll be a workforce that doesn't buy homes (and feed all the
    auxilliary industries), doesn't procreate, doesn't vacation, etc.

    It'll be quiet and compliant (in many ways it already is) and the line
    managers will be happy. But those who were looking to sell the products
    made with their variable serf_force could be in for a shock. At least
    in the US.

One story has it that in the early 1960s Henry Ford II had a meeting with
Walter Reuther (for the young: a prominent labor leader) and afterwards
walked him around the factory, proudly pointing out the state-of-the-art
machinery. "Walter", he said, "with these robots, pretty soon we won't
need workers at all, and then where will your union be?"

Reuther replied "How many cars are you going to sell them?"
