4405.0. "Import, Export, and MTOPS discussion?" by tennis.ivo.dec.com::KAM (Kam WWSE 714/261.4133 DTN/535.4133 IVO) Mon Feb 05 1996 13:40

Does anyone know of a conference discussing the issues of Importing and
Exporting our systems to/from other countries?

To get a demo/evaluation system back into the country from Hong Kong we
need to provide MTOPS figures. Never heard of these before.

MTOPS = Millions of Theoritical Operations Per Second

I found a note reference Steve Handy in a note and have given him a
call but was wondering if there's any disussion anywhere.

Kam,

I think what you need is "Export Licencing"! Try VTX i did "Find Export" and got
to the right page!

> MTOPS = Millions of Theoritical Operations Per Second

My simple-minded guess as to how to figure MTOPS for our Alpha systems
would be:

        MTOPS = clock-speed * number-of-pipelines * number-of-cpus
                where number-of-pipelines is 2 for an EV4, and 4 for an EV5

Hence a 12 processor 8400 5/350 has an MTOPS of 16800, and similarly a
200 4/100 has an MTOPS of 200.

I received mail from Steve Handy indicating that he'd forward my
request to Don AMes, our "MTOPS Expert" in the Washington office.

I'll keep you posted. Learn something new every day.

Please refer to Corporate VTX --> ERM (Export Reference Manual) which
gives you all the info you may need.

You can contact the Corporate Trade office in Washington (re. Keith
Melchers or Don Ames and many others) but it's good to know that almost
each country has an export administration specialist.
