4395.0. "What is DECtie ?" by MKTCRV::KMANNERINGS () Tue Jan 30 1996 11:21

According to the magnificent fount of knowlege Alta Vista, it is a
registered Digital trade mark, but what is

DECtie ?

Is/was it a product ?

Does anyone look after it ?

We,ve got a customer looking for it...

Without any background on the particular problem the customer is trying
to solve, I'm assuming this customer is looking for VEST and TIE, which
are part of the OpenVMS-VAX-to-OpenVMS-Alpha migration package known as
DECmigrate, and DECmigrate is on the CD-ROM distribution set -- look for
*MIGR* on the CD-ROMs. (If the customer has the application source code,
it's often just as easy to migrate directly to fully native images...)

"TIE" is the Translated Image Environment.

The DECmigrate conference is TALLIS::ALPHA_MIGRATION_TOOLS

4395.2CAD difference engine??ZENDIA::BEERMANCharlie BeermanTue Jan 30 1996 13:2616

I worked on a project whose internal name was DECtie, although I
don't know if that name was ever trademarked for us.

This project was later called "DECview3D Compare and Link" and was a
difference engine for CAD drawings. It never shipped as a product,
since DECview3D and its related product suite were "retired" before
"DECtie" was completed.

If your customer makes use of large CAD drawings and wants to
characterize changes to them, this product would have been of
interest to them. Unfortunately it is long dead, the group has not
existed for at least 3 years, and most of the other developers have
left the company.

DECtie was, I believe, an OFTP gateway. I don't think it's supported
any more. There used to be a notesfile on MAJORS::DECTIE_SUPPORT, but
it isn't accessible now.
4395.4DECtie still on lifeSUOSWS::NIESSERWed Jan 31 1996 10:2914
.3 is right.
DECtie (OFTP-server) is still on life. It is still used at least by
two large customers, Embratel in Brazil and Debis (part of
Daimler-Benz) in Germany.
Based on DECtie Debis delivers EDI-services to lots of customers in
Germany. They use DECtie as the kernal for their EDI-Clearing-Center.
DECtie is currently running on VAX OpenVMS V6.2.
If you have further questions regarding DECtie pls. feel free to
contact me.

4395.5...and the winner is...FUNYET::ANDERSONWhere's the nearest White Castle?Wed Jan 31 1996 10:3913
You gotta love this place! So far, we have DECtie as

- Translated Image Environment, part of DECmigrate
- DECview3D Compare and Link, never sold
- OFTP gateway, not supported
- OFTP server, still supported

and they're probably *all* right!

Personally, I never wear a DECtie because it fits too tightly around my
DECneck.

I still have my DECtie from DECworld '88. It's a very ugly tie
that we were required to wear. I didn't go with anything!

I have the '86 DECville tie -- same basic geometric design, but
much better color choices - a very nice DECtie.
4395.8Were there any tie-pins?MKTCRV::KMANNERINGSWed Jan 31 1996 11:299
okay guys, we had the idea of sending him a tie already, so you can tie
a knot in that one (sorry). I suppose the VEST is really a T-shirt.

Anyway, I guess Urban Niesser from Stuttgart wins the quiz..the query
came from Munich so when I get back to them I'll put them onto Urban.

Thanks for the help

PS. This note is now open for the tie rathole...

Ok.

Two engineers working on DECTie would make a four-in-hand!
