4389.0. "ALL-IN-1 FLASHY TEXT MESSAGES" by SNOFS1::GALLAGHERT () Tue Jan 30 1996 01:49

    Folks,

I am looking for examples of fancy messages for use with ALL-IN-1 and
text terminals. One of our marketing managers wants to add some pizzazz
to his announcement messages and has over the years seen several messages
mailed out which have line drawing figures, Xmas trees, a train etc.
    which display on a VT200 & 300 text terminal.

If anyone has any could you mail them to Tony Gallagher @SNO or reply
    to this message.

    Thanks,
    Tony

There is (was?) a conference called CHEST::TERMINAL_ART, that sounds like it
may be what you're looking for...

Chris.

Or you might, somehow politely, tell "one of your marketing managers" to
get with the program. The program does not include flashy text messages
for VT300s through ALL-IN-1 (or NULL-IN-1, depending on your religion).

4389.3No more terminal art in ALL-IN-1IOSG::ELLIOTTRRussell ElliottTue Jan 30 1996 04:599

Please be aware that as from ALL-IN-1 V3.0 escape sequences are NOT
interpreted when reading a mail or document (or more specifically
anything using the LIST function). This was a deliberate change in line
with other products and was done so for security reasons.

    Regards,
    Russell. (ALL-IN-1 Engineering)

Re: terminal art

All this is completely non portable too, so no sending
these sorts of messages across the Internet; people might
get upset seeing their mail programs exploding before
their very eyes and not in the manner some might expect ;-).

Re .4 - Yes, interpretable escape sequences can be considered code embedded in
data, it just has very limited capability. However, should something like that
ever break someone's software (even though it may be crummy software!), word
would likely get out that the author mailed around a virus message (you mean you
*didn't* put together that particular set of escape sequences just to blow up
that person's mail reader?).

This was the basis of the hullaballoo over Java; the MS-Word Virus (notice how
the MS name got associated with it!) is a similar example.

I'm not sure if this was meant as a contradiction, but MIT does in fact offer

Yeah, um, maybe -- but when that document gets copied into a Web page or

Yes, when it's tagged as monospaced text. But most Web page content is
just text -- especially when it's imported from some other medium (like
All-in-1) that doesn't know about HTML.

But I don't really mean to detract from your main point that, in the
ASCII monospaced context, those cute graphics do liven up otherwise
    dead prose (like this note).

Not to be a damper here, but ummm -- more people that we imagine still
only have VT2/3xx technology on their desks, or (at best) a VT1200.
*I* did, until I moved home, and now I just work on a PC via modem
through a VT-emulation, which amounts to the same d*mn thing.

I would love to get more sophisticated about this, but I haven't the
financial or knowledge resources. In English, I haven't any money to
spend on better equipment/software, Digital won't, and I can't find an
"expert" who speaks the same brand of layperson English I do.

So, a little ALL-IN-1 art isn't such a bad thing; a little archaic,
yes, but plenty of us still live in those caves and appreciate
    hyroglyphics, okay?

Great, this rat-hole has turned full circle! So it's probably time for
me to repeat that ALL-IN-1 no longer displays escape-sequence based
terminal art on VTs. People will have to think of something else to
brighten up their ALL-IN-1 mails with.

Of course, if they used the PC client for ALL-IN-1 - TeamLinks - then
they could use video-clips, PowerPoint, bitmaps etc. But as -.1 said,
there's lots of people out there still using the humble VT.

Ahem - re -1...I *did* get the message that it can't be done anymore,
even prior to -1. I simply wanted to mention that the (IMO)
condescending attitude toward the base noter and the marketing person
mentioned was misplaced. Many people in Digital are using equipment
which is state of the art, or at least "current". But many more of us
are using equipment which is hopelessly out of date. It all comes back
to that same old tired rathole about Digital and the lack of
attention it pays to employee technology needs.

    Again, IMO...

4389.31What's the aim?HERON::KAISERTue Feb 06 1996 03:1510
I do a lot of reading, and I like text, but I've never much liked "terminal
art" -- it's terminal, but it usually isn't art. Shakespeare had a term for
it: "gilding the lily".

In business communication I'd rather people pay attention to good writing,
but while we're holding our breaths waiting for that, maybe we can try to
drag ourselves into the late twentieth century. It's a question of aim.
Aiming at terminal art is aiming at the 1970s.

I believe the line is "to gild refined gold, to paint the lily," so the phrase
would more accurately be "painting the lily."

Pretty slick! The only thing I found distracting was not having a WPS
viewer for those file types.

I also was rejected by the SI drawer system!

So, what's the future of this jewel?

    Hi,

If you are using Netscape you should be able to add a viewer for
whatever type documents you are viewing. Alternatively you can view the
documents by adding the drawer(s) to your file cabinet in
    ALL-IN-1/TeamLinks.

The jewel is "ALL-IN-1 Web Interface" (AWI)
Please see note number 1189.* in the ALL-IN-1 notes file
(IOSG::ALL-IN-1) or press keypad 7 to add to your notebook

and it'll ship in a month or so.

In the future it *may* allow you to log into your account over the
    internet.
