4343.0. "Cirrus and IBM" by GRANPA::BDOYLE () Wed Jan 03 1996 08:10

Cirrus and IBM formed a joint venture in the fall of 1994. This new
business was underwritten by the state of New York. The venture would
result in .50 micron chips developed by the two companies in IBM's
    New York FAB.

Why did Cirrus also come to Digital to acquire product?

Cirrus is looking to invest around $2B in manufacturing capacity. To
date they have announced deals with IBM, AT&T and Digital.

My understanding is that Cirrus will be using the new Hudson CMOS6
plant which can deliver ".35" design lines. If the IBM plant is only delivering
".50" it could be that they need more "bleeding edge" work done.

As I understand it the IBM deal was for IBM's old outdated capacity in
Fishkill that at one time was actually a bipolar line that had been
converted to CMOS to make IBM's 486 blue lighning chips, then updated
again for the Cirrus joint venture. I passed through
this facility a few weeks ago while visiting a friend I used to work
with in Fishkill. It is no longer the IBM Fishkill site, but the Hudson
Valley Technology park. It is quite interesting Fab Equipment vendors
as well as several Semiconductor Vendors besides IBM have their place
of business their on one huge site. It has the smell of a real Silicon
Valley East without the traffic snarls!

With all the nasty chemicals used in fabs, it's ironic that it's in Fishkill.

Could have been one of a Hobson's Choice.

Sorry Dave.

Isn't "kill" a Dutch word meaning "river" or something close to it?

    There's the Schuylkill in Philadelphia.

There's even a Murderkill in Delaware.

Bingo. There are many "kills" around the greater NYC area.
Also, you can see a Zee or two.

    Yes, kil (one L) means:
    - deep place in water
    - the riverbed
According to Van Dale, the semi-official Dutch dictionary
