4303.0. "Virtual Reality" by OTOOA::CREASER (DTN 639-4503) Sat Dec 02 1995 12:53

I'm looking for some help with an opportunity to employ Virtual Reality
as an instructional aid for medical schools.

I've had a note posted in the CLT::PRESENSE (the only reference to
VR I could find in the notes list) for some time with no response.

Any suggestions as to whom I could contact within Digital for VR?

Russ Doty @ PKO is the Business Manager for High-End graphics and would
be a good starting point for a conversation on VR.

One of the hotest, new VR environments is the Worldwide Web, with the
VMRL virtual reality language allowing the creation of entire 3d worlds
that one may "walk through" with a VMRL-equipped browser. Peter
Kochevan at the San Dieago SuperComputer Labs is doing some work in
this space for Digital. He's at @SES and in ELF. They've also done some
good work out there on a 3d vistualization environment called TECATE.
Set your browser to URL http://www.sdsc.edu/ and look into the Research
    area.

It would be my guess that the work being done on virtual reality in
conjunction with the WEB might be the most useful, since the ability to
share is built-in. If you want to pursue this, send me mail and I'll
give you other URL pointers into interesting VRML sites.

Don't forget to look into Apple's QuickTime VR, which allows
things that VMRL doesn't (easily), such as building a scene out of
plain 35mm camera photos.

Most definitely! The Star Trek Technical Guide CDROM on my Macintosh
is truely amazing at what you can do! Check it out (there's also
a PC version, but I haven't see it in action).
