4297.0. "loaner machines?" by GOLLY::JRICHARDS () Tue Nov 28 1995 17:25

I'm not sure if this is the correct conference, if not, will someone please
point me to the right one?

Does Digital provide loaner machines to customers interested in evaluating
Digital workstations? What are the channels? (I'm only an engineer)

I happen to know someone involved in evaluating sun vs. Digital hardware.
They are looking for the fastest hardware for their simulation. I was
suprised to hear that they thought the 143 Mhz ultraSPARC would outperform
a AlphaStation 600 5/233!

I can provide more details if needed.

Does the custumer require the machine to be on site ?? If not, what
about referring the account team to one of the US Benchmark Center(s) ?
There's one in LA and one in DC.

Avnet Computer, Digital's Largest System Reseller has a Demo pool of
over $4 million of Digital products. Loaners can be arranged for
customers for a 2-3 week period.

Also, some of Hallmark's (Digital's largest MasterReseller) VARS have
purchased demo Alphastation systems to provide to customers for evaluation.

Please send me mail regarding your friend's location and I will send
you the phone number of the local Avnet office and Sales Managers name.

They likely will need to be on site. However, I don't think I've heard
of the Benchmark Centers before... they aren't the internet "public-access"
machines are they?

Also, it appears that Digital ported the program to Digital UNIX.
I didn't ask what the mechanism was behind the port (if Digital did it
for free or what), but it doesn't seem like they spent nearly as much
time/resources/etc as sun did. Sun had someone tuning their machines
to run optimally with the simulation etc... from the results, I'd
have to guess that Digital didn't.

Hopefully, give a bit of time to tune, they will see that Digital machines
are indeed better.

ALPHASERVER 8400 AND OTHER LARGE SYSTEM TEST BEDS AVAILABLE FOR USE BY
  ALL GEOGRAPHIES AND 3RD PARTIES

Until now, development and support groups around the world have had
tremendous difficulty in acquiring access to Digital's largest
computer systems. Capital constraints and priority shipment of these
systems to customers have minimized internal accessibility and created
  pent up demand.

Benchmarking, application testing for verifying large system support,
performance/load testing, and customer problem analysis requirements
have been impacted by this situation.

Systems Engineering has recognized that a centralized large system
resource center offering short term (up to several weeks) access to
these systems would provide the most cost effective solution for this
  problem.

                                   NOTE

Important - all customer benchmark efforts should
continue to follow existing processes with the local
          geography's Benchmark Center.

STANDARD AND ADAPTABLE TEST BEDS, 7 DAY X 24 HOUR AVAILABILITY

In response, the Systems Engineering organization has created two
large system test beds; one standard, one adaptable, for short term
rental use starting in Q2FY96. Availability is on a first come/first
serve basis - requests which cannot be immediately fulfilled will be
queued. Both test beds are located in our $25M 30,000 square foot lab
facility in Salem, New Hampshire (NIO) and have a number of common
  features, including:

o 28.8 Kbps modem dial-in access and optional ISDN (up to 256 Kbps)
support for an additional charge. Easynet access is available for
      Digital internal groups only.

   o Systems are available for testing on a 7 day/week, 24 hour/day
schedule. Technicians are available for test bed system support
from 6am - 9pm EDT Monday - Friday. Support inquiries received
during off hours will be addressed at the start of the next
      support session.

o An AlphaServer 8400 system containing up to 12 CPUs and 8 GB
of memory in a maximum legally supported configuration, and a VAX
or DEC 7000-760 contains up to 6 processors and 2 GB of memory
available with standard operating systems and Digital layered
      products.

  COSTS

The standard test bed is oriented toward "walk-in" testing needing
limited support - only two days advance notice is required. Minimum
rental duration is one day at $3K/day for the AlphaServer 8400 and
$2.4K/day for the VAX|DEC 7000-760. The standard test bed AlphaServer
8400 has 6 CPUs and 8 GB of memory.

The adaptable test bed is for longer durations or for when special
configuration requirements exist. A minimum of two weeks advance

                                                                Page 3

notice is required for scheduling and set up. Optional consulting,
system reconfiguration, tuning, and related services are available as
are other major vendor products and KAP licensed pre-processors for
additional cost. Pricing for the adaptable test bed is custom priced
based on the requirements of each engagement.

Pricing for all Systems Engineering test beds and services is based on
Digital-internal cost recovery only; Sales, MCS, and SI channels
partners are encouraged to requote prices to external customers,
Partners, VARs, or ISVs at appropriate market rates while integrating
Systems Engineering's cost recovery requirements. Please do not quote
Digital-internal rates externally; Systems Engineering reserves the
right to price at market rates when dealing directly with an external
  customer.

BENEFITS TO DIGITAL DEVELOPMENT AND SUPPORT GROUPS

Finally, AlphaServer and very large VAX|DEC systems are available for
your testing and problem resolution needs at an affordable cost with
minimal advance notice required. We also have a full range of other
Digital and popular 3rd party systems available to meet other testing
  needs.

No longer is there a need for individual groups to spend scarce
capital dollars on large systems - we're maximizing the use of these
resources for the corporation while minimizing the cost.

BENEFITS TO SALES, MCS, AND SI CHANNEL PARTNERS

Our large system resources offer you the opportunity to have your
client or partner get mainframe testing support and results at an
  affordable cost in realtime.

                                                                Page 4

This offering is just one dimension of an organization that
specializes in providing world-class network and systems testing
services in Digital and multi-vendor environments. Look to us to help
you resolve hot issues, problem reproduction support, and consulting
support to help you make the sale or maintain/enhance the
  relationship.

Specific large system configuration needs, reservation requests, and
pre-test consulting support should be emailed to FOUNDR::TESTLAB.

System reservations are subject to availability; requests which cannot
be immediately fulfilled will be queued to the reservations waiting
  list.

Related information is available on the full range of testing services
from Systems Engineering, including brochures and presentation
material suitable for sharing with customers and business partners.

4297.5What software?AKOCOA::kenspc.ako.dec.com::kaminskyWed Nov 29 1995 09:237
Just out of curiosity, what type of simulations does the software
perform and what is the name of the product?

In manufacturing we are using some simulation software that was ported to
Digital Unix for us.
