4240.0. "OCR, text-to-speech, India Stock Exchange" by STOHUB::SLBLUZ::BROCKUS (Who is John Galt?) Wed Nov 01 1995 16:10

Who should handle this? I'm not in sales, and don't know whose
responsibility this is.

Here's a summary of the phone call I just received. I have verified nothing.

Amar Badri of the National Stock Exchange of India, who is in St. Louis
for the next 10 days only, called Digital Equipment Corporation at our
local office, looking for software. The switchboard routed the call
to me, for no apparent reason.

He wanted to talk to someone about scanning documents and converting them
to text. Later in the conversation, he mentioned converting them to
speech. He only mentioned software, although there are obviously special
hardware pieces to a solution like this.

I told him I'd try to find someone to help him, and also directed him to
call 1-800-DIGITAL.

If this is your area, or you know whose it is, please see that someone
contacts him.

They could also contact Omtool (http://www.omtool.com) Omtool now
owns the "DEC Image Express" software that has OCR capability.

Digital also have/had? a "DECtalk in software", I seem to remember some
information about Digital also licensing the software to some other
    company.

For DECtalk information, contact Ron Gemma (DECTLK::GEMMA) or
Anne Nelson (DECTLK::NELSON. They are the product management
folks for DECtalk. I don't think they monitor this conference.

I will extract the base note and give them a copy.

4240.4DECtalk in SoundBlaster, I thinkNEWVAX::PAVLICEKZot, the Ethical HackerThu Nov 02 1995 12:2012
    re: .2

DECtalk licensed to some other company.

I believe that may be Creative Labs, makers of the SoundBlaster
products. I believe that the DECtalk technology is used on some of
    their mid-to-high-end products.

This is from memory, so don't take it as Gospel. I think the IBMPC-95
conference has some reference to this (look in the SoundBlaster note).

4240.5Creative Labs AWE32 TextAssist = DECtalk technologyBBPBV1::WALLACEUNIX is digital. Use Digital UNIX.Thu Nov 02 1995 13:038
I believe the TextAssist in the Creative Labs AWE32, and maybe
elsewhere, is licensed DECtalk technology. You can have DECtalk as a
card for a PC, a box on a serial line, a piece of software for NT with a
sound card, or as a technology license. Take your pick. Creative chose
    technology licensing.

There's a demo of the NT software on "Digital's Roadmap for Windows NT"
CD, EC-N4235-69, available free via VTX LOS.
