4237.0. "UNIX Systems Management" by MAIL1::ESULLIVAN () Wed Nov 01 1995 13:28

I am currently in the middle of a potential outsourcing deal that
requires Digital to demonstrate how "using PolyCenter tools to manage a
non-Digital UNIX enviornment" stacks up against the use of the following
two tools that I do not know anything about:

    -ECO
    -Circle Systems

We are bidding this deal through Andersen who is making the request.
Does anyone know these packages, and can compare them
(feature/benefits) to PolyCenter, or point me in the right direction?

    Regards,

    Gene..

as an ex-Andersen type, I suggest you be slightly careful here....

please mail me offline. You (we) could get tied up doing all the brain
stuff, and they get all the $$..

Send them the latest Polycenter Solutions Guide. If they have
difficulty reading the Fullsail (and others) sections, then we are in deep
sneakers. (is this correct US phrase?).

BTW - they (Andersen) have a whole bunch of people who are (supposed)
to be looking at this stuff anyway, to 'qualify' for their huge
    discounts on Digital kit.

    Rgds,

    Adrian

[been there, done it, had my T-shirt burnt.. watch your T-shirt.. !]

Contact Mark Hebenstreit, for the system management strategy and positioning
issues for UNIX.

As best as I understand it, our strategy is to use Polycenter tools only
for managing environments of homogenous Digital UNIX systems. If there
are multi-vendor UNIX systems to be managed, our strategy is to reference
third party solutions. (i.e. FullSail is dying, if not dead!)

Farmington Hills, MI - Digital Equipment Corporation and Compuware
Corporation today announced a marketing and technical alliance that brings
the EcoTOOLS enterprise systems management solution to the Digital UNIX
platform and Alpha workstations.

The alliance offers Digital UNIX customers in-depth systems management
capabilities and a single point of control for managing client/server
applications. With EcoTOOLS, Digital UNIX customers can diagnose, prevent,
and correct application performance problems or failures for optimized
enterprise system performance and availability. The Digital and Compuware
alliance is a marketing and technology relationship that benefits the two
companies' respective customer bases. The companies will jointly implement
customer seminars, training, and conferences to highlight the use of
EcoTOOLS on Digital Alpha systems.

"Compuware's EcoTOOLS allows Digital UNIX customers to achieve the highest
levels of control and availability for their mission-critical
applications," said Don Harbert, vice president, UNIX Business Segment at
Digital Equipment Corp. "Administrators dealing with the complexities of
mixed environments can achieve optimum performance and increased
availability. Adding EcoTOOLS support for the Digital UNIX platform and
high-performance Alpha workstations represents a significant breakthrough
in providing "mainframe-class" solutions for client/server environments."

"Compuware recognizes the Digital UNIX platform as one of the fastest
growing platforms in the world. To accommodate this demand, Compuware has
partnered with Digital to deliver EcoTOOLS for this expanding segment of
the UNIX market," said Ron Gleason, general manager of Compuware EcoTOOLS.
"By working closely together, this partnership has yielded a fully
optimized version of EcoTOOLS--thus providing unprecedented levels of
efficiency, robustness, and scalability for our common customers."

About EcoTOOLS for Digital UNIX

EcoTOOLS for Digital UNIX enables database and system administrators to
monitor their client/server applications; Oracle, Sybase and Informix
databases; UNIX operating systems and networks for fault and performance
problems. EcoTOOLS dispatches autonomous software "agents" to gather
enterprise-wide performance and configuration information, alert system
administrators to potential problems and then automatically launch
proactive corrective actions. In addition to detailed troubleshooting
capabilities, EcoTOOLS also provides robust console management, graphical
real-time and historical management reporting and security monitoring.

EcoTOOLS provides a deep set of monitoring agents with extensive monitoring
and analysis intelligence for the Digital UNIX environment. Administrators
can choose from a set of pre-packaged management scenarios (including
pre-set corrective actions) to quickly and easily diagnose and correct
problems in their computing systems with little or no set-up time.

EcoTOOLS also features a resource accounting option called EcoCHARGEBACK.
EcoCHARGEBACK allows users to account for system and database resources by
application, track inefficient resource users, and help determine future
system requirements.

Pricing and Availability

EcoTOOLS for Digital UNIX is available today and supports the monitoring
and management of Oracle, Sybase and Informix applications. EcoTOOLS
pricing begins at $23,000 and is based on system configuration.
