Wall Street Journal article this morning said that Novell was negotiating with unnamed sources to sell it applications business (WordPerfect, Quatro Pro, etc.) for less than half what it paid for it about a year ago. Analyst viewed this as "throwing in the towel" in their battle against Microsoft. Revenue from the applications business has dropped like a rock recently due to Windows/95 version delays and stiff competition from Microsoft. 24% of Novell's employees are engaged in activities that bring in just 16% of the companies total revenue. Novell recently sold its UNIX business to Santa Cruz Operations (SCO). Novell's CEO said that Novell was going to concentrate totally on networking where it is a market leader and makes money. Will Novell now be able to compete with Microsoft (W/NT) in the coming network war?

The November 6 edition of INFORMATIONWEEK has an article on Chevron and Pennzoil replacing NetWare with Windows NT. Chevron will replace 500 NetWare servers with NT and Pennzoil will replace its NetWare servers with 200 NT servers. This does not seem to bode well for Novell. | |||||

I'm working with a company thats replacing around 30 Netware servers with 2 Alpha 8400's running VMS. It'd be really good if only the Alphas would perform to spec :-((( ALAN |
