4173.0. "Digital at Telecom 95" by ROM01::PACCAGNELLA () Fri Oct 06 1995 06:39

	Hi,

I just visited yesterday Telecom 95 in Geneva with a group of
	Italian customers.

The Digital stand was really nice and it gives the feeling of a
wealthy company that has completed the recovery. Also the
people at the stand had a positive attitude and were very
	competent.

The only remark is about the Digital presence outside our
	stand.

Many of our partners (remarkably Oracle and Informix) did't had
a single Alpha or Digital PC at their stand. Altogether at
Telecom 95 I saw a lot of SUN,SGI, HP and even IBM Risc workstations
and no Alpha (of course may be I missed them).

Since we are relying more and more on 3rd parties we should also
ask them to promote more our products....

the interesting thing about Telecom 95 is that the telecoms didn't
work. Apparently Swiss telecom screwed up somewhere and the exhibitors
were without external comms for about 4 hrs

Well, given the size of the Telecom XX exhibition (so big that I know
people that stayed in LONDON and flew over to Geneva every day -- those
were the nearest, in time, hotel rooms available!) and the relatively
small size of the city of Geneva, it isn't surprising that some
glitches would appear. There is probably more gee-whiz/golly telecoms
technology installed in the exhibition hall than in any major city in
the world. Remember, few exhibitors are showing off last year's
technology; most are showing off stuff that isn't even available
    anywhere else (commercially).

So, it's more surprising that external comms were only out for 4 hours!

I hadn't heard of any major telecom glitches. I know that they are
sweating with the amount of cellular traffic in the halls. Apparently
there are about 20000-30000 cellular users in and around the buildings.

They can support up to about 800 simultaneous calls before they run out
of their GSM channel allocations, of course channels are also used by
Itineris and SFR who both cover Geneva from their side of the frontier.
