We got one this afternoon (thanks Bill!) that we get to keep - that's what
we needed. Thanks very much for all the offers. Is this a great company
or what?!

| I thought I remembered seeing a memo that came out sometime after it
was published that basically said it had been withdrawn; engr weren't
supposed to use it, rather to use the previous version...

| Where does one hear these things? This is the first I've heard that we even
HAVE such a thing as a Software Engineering Manual.

| It wasn't much a manual as it was trying to write down some of the
existing process, some goodness, etc. Much of Digital has changed
since 1988 so I would take the manual with a large grain of salt
(perhaps an entire saltlick for those you who are near livestock).

| I was on a project that tried to follow that standard "to the letter" and the
project failed - (that was not the entire reason but it was in the top ten
reasons).
I think I recall seeing something later on that the book was to be used "as a
guide" and not be followed to the letter.
If you try to meet each step there will be so much paperwork and overhead
NOTHING will get done... hmm now wait a second - what does that remind me of...
was that book not intended for engineers? :-)

| Hmmm. One hopes that the job trackings, work descriptions, promotion
procedures, & the like for the SW Engineering Organization have
undergone a commensurate change.
