4124.1 | If I see another "This message converted from WPS-PLUS to ASCII"... | DRDAN::KALIKOW | DIGITAL=DEC: ReClaim TheName&Glory! | Sat Sep 16 1995 21:52 | 4 |
| Is BackOffice at least one year more recent than ALL-IN-1(tm)?
Then I'm FOR it!!!

4124.2 | | CHEFS::JORDAN | Chris Jordan, MS BackOffice Centre, UK | Sun Sep 17 1995 10:27 | 9 |
| Exchange is so new, its not yet available.
Exchange will NOT convert WPS-PLUS to ASCII, or give any messages that
it is going to.
However it WILL convert Rich Text Format (bloding, underline, italics,
colours, fonts, embedded objects etc) into ASCII. The problem is NOT
the system that is being used, its the fact the system thinks other
systems aren't as clever as it is!

4124.3 | | DRDAN::KALIKOW | DIGITAL=DEC: ReClaim TheName&Glory! | Sun Sep 17 1995 11:31 | 11 |
| P'raps I was unclear, Chris. I'm not looking for something to convert
WPS-PLUS to ASCII, with or without any notification. I *am* looking
for any technological enticement that will finally and forevermore wean
the laggards in our Management Cadre from their antiquated toolset.
If BackOffice and/or Exchange is that enticement, then bravo!
PS -- loved the typo "(bloding, underline, italics, colours, fonts,
embedded objects etc)" but methought that one could order a special
BackOffice CensorPak that would automatically delete the bloding? :-)

Perhaps an adequate enticement will have to be something
other than technological.

| Well Bob, I figure that since we're down from ~120K to ~60K then we're
BOUND to have a Management Cadre half its former size, and I figure
further that the set of those who were Asked To Leave is BOUND to be
congruent with the set of those who did Not stay Current With
Technology. But wait, then why am I so eager to see the end of the use
of an antiquated toolset? I must be confused somewhere. I'll get back
to ya on that. Perhaps you're right about adequate enticements.
-- And speaking of not current with technology, WHY are we still using
DECnotes?? :-)
|
4124.6 | | QUARK::LIONEL | Free advice is worth every cent | Sun Sep 17 1995 19:50 | 5 |
| We're still using DECnotes because it is efficient, widely available
and relatively easy to use and search. WebForum has a LONG way to go
in that regard.

| Of course, you're right, and on ~all points too. That's why I didn't
come right out -- in my usual understated way -- for Workgroup Web
Forum(tm)... Hey, DECnotes doesn't have much to apologize for... like
an old car that continues past the 200K-mi. mark, it owes us nothing.
We don't need to apologize for using it, either. There are so few more
recent alternatives that do what it does. Now WPS-Plus, on the other
hand... :-) All of which you know. P'raps we had a sarcasm-meter
impedance mismatch, is all.

4124.8 | MCSLT is running Windows95 and Exchange | KALKI::LANG | | Mon Sep 18 1995 07:48 | 12 |
| This is primarily to the base note and to .2. MCSLT (Multivendor
Customer Services) is running Windows95 and is using Microsoft Exchange
for E-mail. The goal is to have 85% of MCS operating in a Windows95 /
Exchange environment by the end of FY96. Gateways exist from Exchange
to VMSmail, ALL-IN-ONE, and internet ... as well as the ability to
include FAX destinations in the mail. The Americas, Europe, and Asia
Pacific will be the three Exchange Domains.
Training ... little or none was required. The software is (largely)
intuitive ... lots of Help Wizards all over the place.

One mans intuition is another mans downfall.
Actually, I've recently heard that MCS is presently offering a "plan"
to migrate customers with at least 100 PCs into the windows 95 era.
The plan supposedly includes:
1/2 day seminar for users for Win95 training. While those users are
attending the seminar, MCS is upgrading their workstations... so that
when the 1/2 day is over, they come back to fully configured
workstations.
Mehopes, nay, mePRAYS, that the developers of this "plan" have
read, studied, and UNDERSTAND the principles described in the Windows
95 Deployment Planning Guide... and are not just figuring on merely
installing the Win95 BITS to these customers' machines. Gawd! What a
mess support will have if that's all they are planning to do!
I'd give an eye tooth to be able to talk to whoever set this up... as I
have a very uneasy feeling about it.

| Ask Microsoft a little, and they'll tell you that it's wiser
to move past Win 95, and go directly to WNT. If large
customers are being advised to do that, why is Digital
moving to Win 95?
As for ALL-IN-1, what's wrong with it? It works, which is
more than a lot of email packages do. If you don't like
WPS+, use Teamlinks...

4124.14 | The OOP is under Global Processing Services | STOWOA::CCALCAGNI | A.F.F.A. | Tue Sep 19 1995 08:57 | 19 |
| The SLT, or Office of the President (OOP), receives their
infrastructure support from the Global Processing Services Organization
under Dick Fishburn.
In the case of the OOP, they have nogotiated their services based upon
the needs of the SLT. Currently this dedicated Service Delivery Staff
is managed by Nick Cappello, who reports to Mike Whitney Manager W/W
Global Processing Services.
If there are any training needs, or any other relating to
Infrastructure, this is managed by Nick Cappello. Nick in turn works
with GPS to coordinate any activities for the OOP.
My suggestion would be to contact Nick Cappello directly if you have
any further questions.

4124.16 | MCS SLT not the usual SLT | QUICKP::KEHOE | Mr. QuickPIC | Wed Sep 20 1995 10:42 | 12 |
| I want to clarify something that is very important. After speaking
with the support organization for our SLT I learned that they have
*not* yet rolled out Windows 95 to the SLT, but that they are working
on a plan to do so.
MCS's (Multivendor Customer Services) leadership team apparently is the
one that has had Windows 95 rolled out to them.
Please take note of this and should this question come up with your
customers, make the appropriate distinctions.

Indeed, critically important. After all Bill G. has pointed out that
Windows95 is fully multitasking and as such _much_ more productive
for all users. Ergo the SLT will become _much_ more productive
resulting in higher profits, answers in notes files and a general
festive atmosphere. After all, Bill wouldn't lie on this now would
he...

| RE: .8
Exchange doesn't have direct gateways to VMSmail. You'd have to
use UCX or another TCP/IP package to send your mail via SMTP.
Other than that, you're correct. I like Exchange. (My group is
putting Voicemail into it)
