4119.0. "Free advertising anyone?" by ANGLIN::BJAMES (I feel the need, the need for SPEED) Wed Sep 13 1995 12:29

In the recent Delta Airline in flight magazine called SKY there is an
article written by Joshua Shapiro who is a New York based technoogy
consultant specializing in creative organizational reengineering. He
writes an article to Secretary of State Warren Christopher on his plans
to reengineer the systems, networks and software at the U.S. State
Department. They plan on investing $50 million to upgrade the systems
at State. Here reprinted without permission is his comments on
    servers:

"Buy DEC servers. The Digital Equipment
    			Corporation has developed the fastest
    			computer architecture in the industry.
The DEC Alpha chip runs faster than and
outperforms any other system on the market.
    			While other companies offer competent
technology, DEC looks as though it will
maintain its lead in performance and function.
This will give you the "headroom" to run the
    			application load efficiently.

Besides speed and reliability, DEC brings much
more to the table. Its servers are optimized
for database operatons, network switching and
    			connectivity, and multimedia services. DEC
servers have been chosen for most of the 40-odd
    			advanced, video-on-demand pilot projects now
being run by cable TV and phone companies. DEC,
with its "GIGAswitch", also leads in integrating
its servers into ATM networks, those very high
speed "backbones" that you intend to install for
    			department communications."

Wow can we use this stuff anywhere? I'd like to be the guy to call on
    Warren Christopher's I.T. director today.

One of the hardest competitors Digital has ever had to compete with.
I'm convinced half of our employees are secretly working with them!

would that be the half who work, or the half who don't (wrt KO's comment
recently posted here! :) (Or perhaps the half who use EINFs!)

I'm convinced its the people who keep selling those DECxxxx type
products; like DECnet and boxes with that DECchip 21064 processor in
    it.

Maybe Digital should buy those guys....

Subject: RE: I/A: Notes entry - Department of State

I really do appreciate your sending me the article from the
Delta Airline magazine regarding the Dept. of State. This has
been a very slow go account. We are currently placing 240 of our
PC's running NT on site, and working on putting our NT Server on
their VAX Cluster. The information you have provided is most
helpful to setting a goal with this account.

I have already placed a few calls to the account to get further
    information and names and numbers.

    Thanks a million.

    Betsy

Well, that's great news. Good luck Betsy, I'm sure after they see the
Alpha server you will get lots of orders for them!

Just looking out for the value of my stock you know!!
