4044.0. "Internet Server Test in Byte August '95" by SUOSWS::64083::BODENSTEDT (TCP/IP for the masses) Wed Aug 16 1995 05:30

I just read the newest Byte mag (August '95) where they
tested Internet Servers.

and now I quote:

"We wre surprised that some of the heavyweights in the
RISC field - including Digital Equipment, ... - declined
to send us their products for review" (page 135)

any ideas, why ???

BTW, the SAG Alpha-based server won the competition. I suspect our
entry would have placed relatively high, but not beat the other
Alpha-based entries. We don't seem to be able to value-package the
Alpha chip-set as well as our OEM partners. Perhaps we should sell off
everything in manufacturing except the chip plant and buy systems back
from SAG and Aspen. They seem to be able to make better (faster and cheaper)
systems. But then, we're DEC (oops Digital) and they're not.

IMHO. it was a good move, on our part, to not enter this competition.

The fact that an OEM Server with Digital's Alpha chip won this competition
can only be good for Digital. It shows that we are not the only one pushing
the Alpha bandwagon. This even may convivce (if marketed correctly) others
to jump on.

Gee, based on one of the replies, I count three (3) Digital boxes in
   the competition.

Three of six systems reviewed used Alpha processors, but none of
the *systems* were made by Digital. So while Digital did
not respond, three companies that use our processor did.

Digital - Captures lead in low-end UNIX RISC server market
	{Livewire, Worldwide News, 27-Sep-95}
According to Computer Intelligence InfoCorp, of La Jolla, Calif., Digital is
now No. 1 among U.S. manufacturers selling multiuser servers in the low-end
 UNIX RISC server market.
"Digital's strong showing in the under $25K UNIX RISC server market is a
testament to the high performance and excellent design of their low-end
AlphaServers," said Aaron Goldberg, executive vice president of Computer
Intelligence InfoCorp. "This announcement will only continue this trend and
set the competitive bar at a high level."
"For Digital and especially for our customers, assuming the lead in this
fast-growing segment of the server market is exciting news," said Pauline
Nist, vice president of the AlphaServer Business Segment. "It signifies the
accelerating market acceptance of our 64-bit Alpha technology and the Digital
UNIX operating system, the first commercially available 64-bit UNIX."
From workstations, to network servers, to high-end enterprise servers,
Digital is the only vendor to offer the raw power and exceptional scalability
of 64-bit RISC computing across the entire product line. Digital's low-end
UNIX RISC servers include the uniprocessor AlphaServer 1000 4/266 and
AlphaServer 400 4/233 systems. Both deliver large-system performance at
small-system prices and are backed by the industry's most generous warranty --
three years with next business day response. Both are also available for
Microsoft Windows NT and OpenVMS operating systems.
These PCI-based servers are designed as database servers, application
servers, and PC LAN servers for workgroups or small businesses that require
reliable, affordable systems with unsurpassed performance for
business-critical applications. They can be preconfigured with a
comprehensive list of Internet server software for Digital UNIX or Microsoft
 Windows NT environments.
The AlphaServer 1000 4/266 system, upgraded this month from 233MHz to
266MHz, is packaged in a deskside tower configuration, provides exceptional
expandability, and can be managed as a single clustered system for data backup
and workload balancing. Pricing remains unchanged, beginning at $15,970 for a
system configured with 64MB RAM, 2.1GB disk, PCI Ethernet, CD-ROM drive, and
 Microsoft Windows NT Server software.
The AlphaServer 400 4/233, also upgraded this month from 166MHz to 233MHz,
provides small businesses and departments high availability and the power of
64-bit Alpha computing for network, print, file, and E-mail requirements, all
housed in a deskside mini-tower. Entry systems include 32MB RAM, 1.05GB disk,
PCI Ethernet, CD-ROM drive, PCI graphics, and Microsoft Windows NT Server
 software.

Digital - Benchmarks disclosed for new Digital Web servers
	{Livewire, Worldwide News, 27-Sep-95}
(Digital today unveiled a line of new Internet-ready AlphaServer systems.
See "Digital unveils first Windows NT RISC Web servers" in Worldwide News.)

Based on benchmark testing performed by the company, Digital's new Internet
AlphaServer systems far outperform the competition.
For example, in the Internet Performance Benchmark, using Netscape
Communications Software V1.1 for Digital UNIX, the AlphaServer 400 4/233 was
able to support 106,680 16K files per hour, compared with 66,188 files on the
Sun Netra i20 system, a 60 percent advantage. Yet the uniprocessor Alpha
systems cost considerably less than the two-CPU Sun system. The AlphaServer
1000 4/266 scored an even higher 136,052 files accessed per hour; it too costs
 less that the Netra i20.
In a financial software benchmark using Microsoft SQL Server V4, the
AlphaServer 1000 4/266 system performed 284,790 transactions per hour, more
than 2.6 times faster than the Compaq ProLiant 1500 running at 100MHz.
In benchmarks certified by AIM Technology (UNIX System Performance Guide,
Fall 1995), the AlphaServer 1000 4/266 turned in not only superior performance
but exceptional value as well. For example, the system outperforms the IBM
RS/6000 PowerServer C10 by 3.5 times and the Tricord DS1000/5100 Pentium
100MHz by 2.6 times, and provides better price/performance than the Compaq
 ProLiant 4000 and Fujitsu-ICL Superserver J534i.
The new Internet AlphaServer systems are the industry's first Windows NT
RISC Web servers. NT Web AlphaServer systems are ideal for users currently
operating in a Microsoft Windows environment who want a seamless, affordable
path to WWW publishing. All are backed by Digital's industry-leading
three-year hardware warranty and comprehensive software support services.
