One of the Sunday papers that I read (either the "Nashua Telegraph" or "The Boston Globe") carried a story that I believe originated from the AP. The story described the vast expense of building new semi- conductor fabs and contained a map showing where major fab investments had been made and by whom. The map showed a variety of vendors including at least: o Intel o AMD? o LSI Logic o IBM/Toshiba o Motorola (twice) FAB-6 and Digital/DEC was not shown. Atlant

Atlant - You're right. AP it was. Also in Sunday Trib in Chicago (Motorola's home town). We are not considered a semiconductor maker by the media is probably the only answer. the Greyhawk

Texas Instruments, where Jack Kilby invented the integrated circuit, is also not listed, so I wouldn't consider this an authoritative list. TI just had their most profitable year in their entire history according to their Web page, primarily due to semiconductors (in the 80's, the SC division nearly drove them into the ground and government electronics kept the company alive; I know, I was there!). TI is a major worldwide semiconductor supplier, although I don't think they are big in microprocessors compared to the ones listed.

It could be that we started building a FAB with a cost around $400M three years ago and these other guys are currently building FABs that will cost over $1B. -Bruce

They only show a limited list, probably reflecting the largest chip makers. We are definetly not among the 5 biggest semiconductor vendors. |
