4013.0. "CS7/IP" by WOTVAX::ROWEM (Frank Gamballi's Trousers) Mon Jul 31 1995 13:21

    Dear World.

Has anybody heard of a software product, allegedly produced by
Valbonne called CS7/IP where IP stands for "Inteligent Product"
or similar . I've tried a few people @VBE but no joy so far.

    Any clues?

IP stands for an Inteligent Peripheral. Check with Kevin Miles at: TAEC::MILES regarding the
C7 protocol group and their product set.

Is it possible you are refering to the DECss7 product which
emminates from Valbonne. The IP portion would stand for "Intelligent
Peripheral" steming from a Bellcore initiative called the AIN or "Advanced
Intelligent Network"

For the WEB walkers check out Bellcores WWW web site at

IP stands for "Internet Protocol" and this acronym is widely used inside and
outside Digital. If this product group tries to use the acronym to stand for
something else, they are going to generate massive confusion in the marketplace.

DECss7 has been developped in Valbonne (France) and you can contact the product
manager Michel Blanc at (DTN 828-5503) or myself (DTN 592-4263) in the US for
more information.

The IP platform has been developped in the state (MKO) you can contact Fred
Mettler (DTN 244-7371) or Rich Racko (DTN 264-2649).

There is also another Voice platform (like the "inteligent Peripheral")
developped in Annecy, where the contact is Philippe Constantin (DTN 887-4153)

The following is the latest Intelligent Network annnouncement from Digital: the
AlphaServer IP (Intelligent Peripheral) Platform.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

The Digital AlphaServer IP Platform is a high-performance,
cost-effective platform for voice applications services on the
public telephone network that provides application developers with
unique management capabilities. A series of standard functions
provide developers with the raw data needed to monitor and measure
all aspects of the applications. These functions also ensure
quality levels of service are maintained for customers, and that any
problems or failures can be isolated and rectified as quickly as
possible.

Dialogic's DSP technology provides the voice processing and call
control functions for the AlphaServer IP Platform. They feature
high performance, state-of-the-art digital signal processing
technology and the latest advances in downloaded feature algorithms.
Features such as call answering, call origination and call
termination, hook flash, call bridging, MF/DTMF recognition,
recognize busy, recognize answer by FAX are among the many
capabilities supported. In addition, the Platform supports
Dialogic's Signal Computing System Architecture (SCSA).

The ability to expand an application cost-effectively and maintain
high availability across multiple processors is provided through
Digital's AdvantageCluster architecture. With clustering, multiple
servers can share common resources such as voice prompts, voice
messages and database storage. Clustered AlphaServer IP Platforms
are capable of supporting thousands of users.

The AlphaServer IP Platform also integrates a variety of
capabilities available from within Digital's DECss7 software
product. DECss7 is Digital's implementation of worldwide
Signalling System Number 7 protocol standards. DECss7 is a unique
distributed implementation which provides unsurpassed levels of
availability and scalability. Some voice solutions providers
identify SS7 as a requirement to provide a more efficient and full
function interface to the switch for call set up using the ISDN User
Part (ISUP) of SS7, and to access remote databases, such as Service
Control Points (SCPs).

CUSTOMER BENEFITS:

The fastest growing, and most competitive market in the
telecommunications industry is voice-based information services.
The AlphaServer IP Platform addresses the business demands of this
market by helping customers to achieve

   - faster time-to-market for new services

   - lower development costs

   - greater flexibility in customizing services.

CONFIGURATIONS:

The AlphaServer IP Platform will be offered in three basic
configurations; two for network implementation and one for service
development.

Duplex network system - intended for network implementation with
major components duplicated for high availability, ensuring
        no single point of failure.

Simplex network system - intended for network implementation with
no duplication of major components including processor,
voice board chassis and power supply.

Lab system - an inexpensive configuration for development and
demonstration. It is not intended for a live network
environment and does not support duplicate components.

PRICE AND AVAILABILITY:

Packaged systems with AC power supply options will be available for
customer shipment in June. Systems with DC power supply options are
scheduled for July shipment. Pricing is dependent on the number of
ports and the configuration requirements.

DIGITAL ANNOUNCES HIGH PERFORMANCE VOICE PROCESSING PLATFORM

...extends company's full array of Intelligent Network products...

SUPERCOMM, Anaheim, CA -- March 21, 1995 -- Today at SUPERCOMM, Digital
Equipment Corporation announced a UNIX-based, NEBS compatible voice
platform utilizing the AlphaGeneration 64-bit processor family -- the
fastest in the world -- combined with Dialogic Corporation's
industry-leading voice and telephony components. The AlphaServer IP
Platform allows Digital software partners and Value Added Resellers
(VARs) the opportunity to create sophisticated applications for the
    central office environment.

The AlphaServer IP Platform provides the core voice and communications
resources necessary to support advanced voice applications such as

	RE .3

As you have pointed out IP in the data communications networking
community = Internet Protocol. You have to understand that Bellcore is part
of the telecommunications world in they don't recognize data communcations
acronyms so they definded IP = Intelligent Peripheral.

In order to understand this rivalry you need only attend one ANSI
T1-S1 or equivalent standards body meeting where both the computer
networking, aka Digital, IBM, HP, Sun, etc and telecommunications, aka
Bellcore, AT&T, MCI, GTE, etc attend and split into their respective camps
on EVERY issue.

When I first saw the AlphaServer IP announcement I thought, Oh boy,
this going to create confusion with every one from engineering to the
customer.

Many thanks to all who replied I should be able to sort out what
    I need from this.
And yes I found it a bit odd that IP stood for anything else, I went
round the I-net camp first before I realised it was Telecom!

How long ago did Bellcore define this?
I suppose if this is a standard definition in the telecom world, there isn't
anything we can do about it. But I urge the people responsible for marketing
this Digital product to be aware of this confusion and to make it clear what
IP stands for in this context. And I don't think increasing the rivalry between
telecom and datacom folks is in Digital's best interest.
