3917.0. "Seek employee services contact" by SALEM::BURGER (NORM) Mon Jun 05 1995 12:01

I'm looking for someone to contact about the Digital discount directory
which is accessed at VTX DISCOUNT. There was a reference to a
corporate employee services and recreation office at MSO but their
phone number no longer seems active. There was also a reference to a
mail address of ICS::ACTIVITIES but that address does not work. Anyone
have a phone or mail contact for the corporate employee services and
recreation manager (if one still exists?)

    Thanks.

223-9541? Plus some sites have their own...
(According to vtx tel, then searching for employee services
    in phrase)
(223-5402, 223-9910 were some of the site numbers)
(The discount infobase was part of livewire, the contact for
that (listed in vtx registry choice 5) isn't in elf any more,
    I'll pass that along)

One of the problems with VTX is that, unlike Notes, readers can't see how
old an item is unless the poster manually puts a date in the text. Therefore
there is a huge volume of obsolete material in various VTX databases. I en-
counter out-of-date phone numbers and email addresses in VTX databases several
times a year.

The Discount Directory as we knew and loved it has gone away. I've
kept some of the information in my files, so if you are looking for
something specific, send mail to me at either the address above or
at GRIMLY::LWIRE_IP. Bear in mind, however, that the information
in my "archive" is BADLY outdated. I'd suggest you contact the
individual merchant to see if a discount is still being offered to
    Digital employees.

I'll pass along that information about VTX_DISCOUNT, too. Thanks for
    the heads up.

Someone just told me off-line that if you hit PF1 KP4 while displaying a
posting in VTX, it shows the date posted. Very useful to know. However, most
people don't know about this feature, so the fact that an item is out of date
may not be immediately obvious.

It still isn't obvious, unfortunately. My VTX window is currently showing a
page that says it is from 12-Feb-1991, but contains information posted in May
of 1995. I've seen several instances of things that apparently haven't been
updated in years but constantly have new things on them.

(FYI, one such case is the LIVEWIRE set of pages; check the GMA page.)

FWIW, you can modify your VTX window (if you are using the DECwindows VTX
interface) to display the "date posted" (whatever that actually is) all the
time.

Followup on .5:

Very shortly after I posted this, I received communication from people involved
in Livewire. They have been very eager to identify and solve problems in VTX
information. I'm impressed. Kudoses to them, and good luck in their quest to
slay the dragon of outdated VTX information.

FYI, the date on the page is either a provided date or (if the provided date is
missing) the system date when the page was replaced. In the case of the page I
was pointing out, there was a provided date and it was never changed. There
was some question about what that date is actually supposed to tell you;
clearly it is being interpreted differently by different people.
