3914.1 | Open CICS on Digital UNIX? | CSC32::C_BENNETT | | Fri Jun 02 1995 13:18 | 15 |
| IBM in conjunction with Digital has ported IBM's CICS transaction
processing product (Customer Information Control System) to the
Digital UNIX platform.
The IBM CICS product has been a big player in the TP realm and has
been around for 25 years or so. IBM is pushing "Open CICS" and has also
ported CICS to HP platforms.
I believe Digital's hope is to replace all of those millon dollar 30/40
series mainframes with Alpha 2000/ 8000 series for a fraction of the
cost/low maintenance. Maybe the IRS deal could be related
to maybe a port of the CICS TP system?

| For more information about IBM's CICS running on Digital UNIX, see the
conference RDGENG::CICS. CICS for Digital UNIX is sold and supported by
Digital, available from SSB now. Runs the same COBOL applications that
CICS/ESA does.
So, are the AlphaServer 8200/8400 systems more powerful than ES/9000?
Richard.

3914.6 | Here's the facts | NCMAIL::RPOWELL | | Tue Jun 06 1995 15:44 | 13 |
| I'm the ISSC Account Manager for Digital....ISSC is the SI division of
IBM, and was recently awarded half of a pilot for the IRS to begin a
project for electronic filing and refunds for tax returns...until we
get 'flat tax' and the IRS becomes extinct...anyway, the bank that is
managing the pilot in Chicago selected a VAX-based software package
from a Digital ISV called 'Intranet' to handle this project. ISSC is
now installing two 7000's running the Intranet software to handle the
electronic funds transfer side of this pilot. ISSC also owns the VAX
installed base in several of our larger accounts, so don't be surprised
when you hear or read about IBM buying and using Alphas (or VAXes) in
the future...it's really an 'open world' out here!

| It's typically the divisions doing contracts for the government - they buy
what's best for the project, and in many cases, that means Digital. This
is largely due to VMS and the breadth of language products we have there,
especially Ada.

| Hey, GBRUCE, give me a break. I'm on vacation. And what's to say that
in 5 years time IBM won't be buying a bunch of Alphas for the very same
"service Digital's installed base" reason that drives them to buy PDP11s
and VAX/VMS systems today?

Chris,
I support a football team called Heart Of Midlothian F.C.
and one of the nicknames for the club and fans
are the "Jambo's" (along with others of course) so
South Queensferry Jambo (me) #1 !!!!! does that explain anything
:-)

| I wrote my last reply from my sister's house while on vacation in NC;
my brother-in-law lent me his computer.
I'm writing this reply from my apartment in MA - I'm reading mail and
Notes, but am still on vacation for another week.
Good luck with your transition to Motorola. I've always thought of them
as a good company. My home computer uses one of their microprocessors,
as do some of the networking products we build over in Littleton. And
as someone who likes Macintoshes and Fords, I'm sure I'll be buying some
more chips from your new employer sometime in the future!

| QueensFairies aside (y'all know Ty Herndon? :^]), I think IBM has shown
uncharacteristic good judgement in buying our equipment to get the job
done. Pretty damn smart for a company not well known for its
forward-thinking.
Now, given that we've got *one* dinosaur's head turned, could someone
stop by the US Federalist Government and explain the similarities
between Unisys and a TRS-80? My last Unisys to Digital conversion
totally negated the need for the Commanche Peak Power Plant.
