3913.0. "DIRECTV discount for Digits??" by ODIXIE::FLAHERTY () Fri Jun 02 1995 01:48

I have read internal documents indicating that Digital provided
application software and manages the subscriber management system for
DIRECTV. DIRECTV is a DBS service from Hughes Electronics.
I seem to recall from a co-worker that Digital employees are
eligible for a discount for programming from DIRECTV. Is this true?? If
so, is ther a contact within Digital or Hughes?
Also, does anyone know when/if there will be second-source suppliers of
the 18" satellite dish that only RCA markets at this point. $699 is
still a little too pricey. Thanks in advance.

Sony now offers systems, but they're priced higher. Expect more
    competition over the next year.

I have never seen anything suggesting that Digital employees get
discounts - the idea seems a bit far fetched to me.

Rick,

You might want to get in touch with Joe Bentley @CEO. He's the manager of
the support team for the DirectTV project.

Digital is the prime contractor for the DirecTv billing system. We
own and operate the hardware and network for DirecTv. The program office
is located in Charlotte. The hardware is located and managed in Colorado
Springs. The application was written and is maintained by a subcontractor
to Digital called DBS Systems. Digital employees and DBS Systems
employees do not get discounts on either the DirecTv programming or the
equipment. We do have a dish and a box here on site at CXO3 provided by
DirecTv for monitoring purposes. We have to pay for the programming. As
far as I know, the only people getting a discount on anything are DirecTv
    and Hughes employees.

Sony equipment should be in the stores sometime in June. About six months
from now, three more vendors will be allowed to sell equipment.

For more information about DirecTv see note 809 in SCAACT::SATELLITE.
