I note with some pleasure that some DECUS talks will be broadcast over the MBone this spring. I'd like to tune in and I wonder who else is planning to do the same. Also, I have been trying to reach the ftp site (chocolate.pa.dec.com) where I am suppose to be able to find MBone software and information for digital UNIX users. However, that machine does not seem to be reachable now. Is this a temporary problem, or do I need to look elsewhere now? Rich Hart.

3852.5 | virtual internet backbone for multicast IP | GOLLY::HART | Fri May 05 1995 14:20 | 15 | |
MBONE means virtual internet backbone for multicast IP. It was developed 2 or 3 years ago (1992?), by Steve Deering at Xerox PARC, with help from others. The IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) adopted MBONE as the basis for wide area time critical real time communications, such as video conferencing. It has been used for the past few years to broadcast technical conferences, and other things, worldwide. Communications are 2 way, so I at my workstation in my office I could watch a presentation at a remote conference, and ask the speaker questions, either vocally, or using other conferencing mechanisms that are available. Also, I have solved the problem with access to chocolate.pa.dec.com: I needed to get through a firewall.. Rich Hart. |
