3772.0. "Is the wheel being re-invented here?" by JOBURG::HARRIS () Wed Mar 29 1995 06:30

    Dear All,

    It seems as if our subsiduary has been left to work out it's own way of
    doing things. Is this normal practice for new subsiduaries?

    (See previous Joburg::harris note.)

    I agree that there are some processes in place in South Africa, which
    are as they are elsewhere in Digital.

    Surely there are Guidelines somewhere which would culminate to
    "communication" or rather the same model (More or less) being used as a
    backbone to business in Digital.

    I would appreciate any comments.
    Regards Ivan.

    Well here is comment as requested - not sure that it will encourage you
    though ;

    What you are witnessing in the SA subsidiary is not really any
    different from what has happened in many Digital evolutions recently.
    I have seen this in Eastern European sub. creation, the "acquisitions"
    such as DEE, Data Logic, Mannesmann, etc. and most surprisingly,
    recently in the PCBU, NPBU and to some extent MCS.

    The old Digital is breaking up. Super Nova. And out of chaos new life
    forms are being created. Some of this has great future potential for
    new markets but regrettably a few babies are being lost with the
    bathwater. This is particularly poignant if you are a part of the
    "new life form" with a memory for some of the more fundamental
    practices that served us well - like part numbering, call handling,
    network access .... etc.

    No, I do not think that your experience in SA is fundamentally any
    different from other new Digital ventures - just that you are in a
    special position of being part of it whilst remembering the details
    of how the old Digital worked.

    /Chris.

    You want us to show you how *WE* do it? And embarass ourselves to our
    newest subsidiary?  Get real!

    And when you get your new wheel invented, we'd appreciate it
    *tremendously* if y'all would share, OK? We're trying now to figure
    how to make ours work without spokes, tube, or tire (they're coming for
    the bearings *next* week).

   ...that should read _sporks_, tube or tire :-)
