ago got a call from DEC the other day. They wanted to see if he was
interested in coming back to work.

The Colorado CSC is currently bringing a variety of temps in all areas
(VMS, Networks, OSF, etc.) and I believe some of them are permanent
positions. We have a number of TFSO folks back working temp contracts,
from 6 months to 1 year in length.

3757.5 | Those now working for minimum wage might be interested in returning... | ROWLET::AINSLEY | Less than 150 kts. is TOO slow! | Thu Mar 23 1995 11:01 | 9 |
| re: .0 Most of the people I know who were TFSO'd are so glad to be out of our
stressful environment, that you'd have to put a gun to their heads to make
them come back. One person said, "It's great to be able to spend all my
energy on fighting the competition (and winning) rather than the internal
politics at Digital."
So, I guess my answer to your question is, Nope.

| It is happening. I can speak only for myself and why I returned.
I was TFSO'd 6/94 and returned as a full time employee on 1/95. Unlike
.0, I did NOT seek to come back. When I left in June, I felt my Digital
days were behind me and I was excited about the future. I threw myself
into my job search and felt very comfortable about my progess, when I
was approached about coming back.
I knew it would take a long time to gain the appropriate approvals and
I did not bank on this happening. Quite the opposite. As a result when
the approvals were obtained and an offer extended, I had other offers
on the table.
I elected to come back to Digital because it was the best offer. I
could have elected to not accept any of the offers but emotionally it
was important to get back to work and a positive cash flow is always
nice to have.
My advice to those seeking to come back is that it is a long shot,
don't count on it, and work your other leads aggresively.

3757.9 | Even the tech writers want to come back... | TNPUBS::J_GOLDSTEIN | Run over on the Info Highway | Thu Mar 23 1995 18:01 | 9 |
| In the last month, I've heard about 3-4 people who want to return (and these
are technical writers who are willing to come back, can ya imagine that!). I've
heard that it's the people and the flexibility that they miss most.
Maybe ex-Digits really can't adjust to the outside world :-)

Believe it or not I'm one of those who came back.
I left in 90 from Hudson SCO, at the time we (my wife who
also worked at HLO) needed a change. This was primarily
driven by economics, just married, looking for a home,
starting a family etc. Put the feelers out and wound up
at Intel Albuquerque. Learned alot, bought that house,
had 2 kids but I realised something was missing. Mostly
our families. I always kept in touch with friends at HLO,
left under good terms and waited for an opportunity(FAB6).
Left behind #1 semiconductor company in the world for DIGITAL
SEMICONDUCTOR and the worlds fastest Microprocessor ALPHA!

| I know of several people who've left and, for one reason or another,
would like to return (although one was just offered a job and decided
to turn it down because he wasn't entirely comfortable yet with DEC's
continued viability). He voluntarily left DEC last June and the company
he's at is in no great shape either but he's personally done well
there. So, I think for him it's a case of the devil you know versus the
one you don't.
The folks I know are all in the networks space.

| I'll have to let you know. ;-)
As for flexibility, it is a matter of jumping to the right job.
I nipped an interview in the bud when it was apparent that the
manager's metric for a good job was whether or not I'd work a
minimum or 45 hours. I told this manager that I have worked overtime
when the situation called for it but that it has been rare with
me. I asked how he would feel if I came in and exceeded his
expectations (and all my performance reviews exceeded expectations)
and turned my terminal off after 40 hours and went home. He leaned
back and said, "Of course the project is most important but... I
have other people who are already putting in more than 40 hours and
I have to think of the team." I knew the interview was over one millisecond
after he used the word "but." To me, it showed a lack of perspecacity
or worse, a devaluing of the worker (45 hours for 40 hours pay is a 12%
reduction on compensation, folks).
If you have the time, take your time and select the right job, and
you'll minimize trying to come back or leaving. Digital is (or was)
a great place to work. It provided me with the means and opportunity
to exceed the job requirements. Maybe I'd come back, but if my
philosophy about job selection is correct, I'll simply wish you all
well from my new, happy place of employment.
