Ivan,
I Don't know about the partnumber. But the decal with contract
information must be a local thing, at least if you are in Europe,
you are in Digital's "European Zon", right? :-)
I know of countries that produce stickers/decals that is placed on the
system at installation with decnumber, phone number to MCS and such
things. Mail me if you want a contact. Never heard of anyone putting
contract information on it.

3751.4 | Serial # Elimination.....NOT | MSDOA::SCRIVEN | | Wed Mar 22 1995 11:24 | 19 |
| Ivan:
A couple of years ago, MCS Service Delivery and Admin jointly came up
with a program called "Serial # Elimination". This provided Service
Delivery and the customer the option of what was referred to as the
sticker program, which gave the customer Xn stickers to be used on
whatever equipment (i.e., terminal, printer, anything but system boxes)
they wanted to put it on and they were charged a quantity price on
their contract. Once instituted, implementation was a BEAR and then
they said, "OOPPSS!! just kidding...." and have said that this option is
available if it is a "customer satisfaction" issue only. No longer a
standard offering.
I don't know if these may be the stickers your seeing or not.... Check
with a Service Delivery manager where you've seen them and I bet he
could help....

3751.5 | I think.. DECnumbers...Contract... Prefix.... | JOBURG::HARRIS | | Wed Mar 22 1995 14:11 | 8 |
| re .2 Thanks Kjell, I thought as there are many pieces of equipment on
a site with different DECnumbers (Purchased at different times) that
the one thing that might be common would be a contract number prefix or
something along those lines. I guess I need to speak with the people
that are handling the database customer information (Space I think)
Thanks again.

3751.6 | Maybe a sample will help us? | JOBURG::HARRIS | | Wed Mar 22 1995 14:23 | 25 |
| Hello JPs,
Thanks very much for your response, The chance that I will be able to
get hold of the manager is remote. We have to come up with a working
solution we (Our CSC in Johannesburg) are receiving a mountain of
service calls with scant inforamtion. Which of course means the
engineer has to visit the site to first fix the customer then the
faulty device. For the client it is just too much sweat to get the
option off the decal on the rear of the system.
It makes pre-call management possible with the correct Model.
Are any samples of stickers/decals available?
If we end up printing them locally, we would like to see some which are
currently used. Also maybe one of these "Sticker Program" stickers.
My location is JHB/02 or CPT/01 but Preferably JHB/02
Or Postal for those not able to access VTX SITES.
Ivan Harris, Digital South Africa, Box 6582, Roggebaai,8012, South Africa
Once again thanks,
Regards Ivan

| Ivan,
Be careful putting contract information on stuff like terminals. Gear
for which there is an option-swap maintenance strategy.
Imagine this . . .
Customer X has contract identification stickers on their terminals.
One goes belly-up. Customer logs a FS call. FSE swaps the terminal
and brings the dead one back to Digital.
The dead terminal is repaired and used at Customer Y where another
terminal has decided to break.
Customer Y's termianl now has Customer Xs' contract sticker on it.
Just a thought,
Bill

Ivan,
IMHO it's more flexible to only put the option/pcg type and the serial
on the decals. Imagine that you have the contract number on the decals
and a workstation goes of contract (it's sold for example). You would then
have to make sure that the decal is removed as it has the contract number
from the wrong customer. Or let say that it is on warrenty and has not
been taken up on a contract, you then need the serial number to verify
the warrenty anyway...

3751.9 | Contract number label | TRUCKS::RICHARDS | Mike Richards @SBP, UK | Thu Mar 23 1995 09:25 | 27 |
| Ivan,
We use such a label here at CSS in the UK. It is used on special
products we develop for military or government contracts, hence the
need for the contract number to appear on the product. It looks like
this:
[digital logo]
model
Part no.
S/N: DOM:
NSN:
Contract no.
Hz V~
W A
Total weight Kg
Digital Equipment Co. Ltd.
Part number is 36-41383-01

Mike.

3751.10 | What format have other subsiduaries use? | JOBURG::HARRIS | | Tue Mar 28 1995 12:12 | 10 |
| We have settled for a DIGITAL Log, OUR National 0800 number and a
reference code which will link us to info in a database. I have
suggested the same ref be used as our local Smart (or is it SPACE
database?)
What format have other subsiduaries used for this "Reference"?
This info will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks and regards Ivan

3751.11 | Stickers? We don't need no stinking stickers! | BVILLE::FOLEY | Instant Gratification takes too long... | Thu Mar 30 1995 14:07 | 14 |
|
This string all relates back to a basic concept, "Something is broken".
What's broken is the idea of putting all the little stickers in places
where only a contortionist (or a Field Service Engineer) can get to...
There has been progress (Vaxstation 4000's for example) of moving the
needed infomation up front, but by and large the majority are when they
cannot be easily seen.
So, can we have someone in "design_land" handle this? Some nice little
flip down door where all the stickers go? On everything? Thanks.

large one that's available in the Sears hardware Dept.) Customers are
amazed that I can read the numbers backwards. :-)
