3678.0. "The big black hole and my internal mail..." by JOBURG::HARRIS () Tue Feb 07 1995 11:03

All my internal mail keeps going to a closed digital building (now
occupied by others) I have tried everything but it still ends up at
    JHB/01
I would like it to go to JHB/02 or CPT/01 (See VTX SITES)

My VTX Profile says ...JHB and I can't seem to change that field.
Various attempts to rectify this problem have not succeeded.
    Any helpers?
    Regards Ivan

Mailstop changes need to be made thru HR...send a mail to
ICS::USHR, give them your badge # and tell them what your
correct mailstop should be. After they change the EMF,
then your local ELF Administrator updates ELF, you'll see
    the change.

Me too. I have been trying to get my addess changed from EWO to HSO
for six months. I have gone through the Hotline and HR with no
success. My manager says my profile has been changed, but ELF still
shows a facility that is closed. The Hotline says they can't change
your mail address. HR syas it has been changed, but it isn't.

It doesn't seem that hard of a prblem, but I sure can't seem to fix it.

This demonstrates just how complex it can get when you don't even
trust people to know and provide their own mailstops.

Even more annoying than the perennial problem of incorrect ELF details is the

Then it would be ELF and CELF (Contract Employee Location Finder).
Contract employees (like myself) are temps and can come and go too
quickly for ELF maintainers to be bothered (I guess). I'm a POD
which stands for "'Planfully' Outsourced Digit"; an ex-DEC employee
hired for my services in technical documentation. For me, the clock
struck midnight on January first and so far the only two things that
have changed for me have been my paycheck provider and the absence of
Digital distribution list mail from my former organization. (Well,
other little things go with the territory, too.)

But back to the point - I wonder how cost-effective it would be to maintain
such a transient workforce.

Many of us are on 6-month contracts to one organization. This is
sometimes less transient than employee status.

There is no doubt, and I have heard it OFTEN from my clients:
contractors are h*****sh difficult to locate at Digital. There HAS to be
    a better way...

Thought: all contractor status is forwarded weekly from HRD to
Security. It should, theoretically, be possible to sidetrack some of
that information for inclusion into a WEEKLY updated contractor
    database.

I would like to see Security be able to get the information correct and
consistent from one building to the other. I work in 2 buildings
consistently and visit others from time to time, and I find that
Security has different information on their databases from one site to
the next (no badge #, name spelled differently, etc,.), besides the
difference in Security policies at each site.

Some contractors aren't so transitory TVM. I started at DEC in Feb
1986, and three countries and gawd knows how many sites later, here I
am. I've been back at DEC for more than 5 continuous years, and have
total service of over 7 years.

The only way I know of to find a Euro-scumbag, is to post a note in
LOBLO::EURO_CONTRACTOR, and that's a) unoffical, and b) not as widely
read as it should be. There should be a CELF, even if it's
self-maintained. Care to set one up anyone?

VTX PROFILE gets your address from Personnel via EDCF forms.
If you address is not correct on VTX PROFILE, then have your manager
correct it on an EDCF form and send it to Personnel.

I love the replies that include the "...just get your manager to..."

I've had 8 managers in 10 months and a colleague has had 27 managers in

We reckon we're ahead if we can get expenses signed off. Getting EDCF,

    Ivan,

This sounds like a possible All-in-1 Message Router entry problem. You
could check with the CNS Helpdesk at 800-332-2468 or DTN 223-2420.
Explain to them what is happening, and ask them to check your entry in

Ivan,

This string is 6 months old, yet only 32 minutes after
your query, you were (correctly) told that the way
to get your loc code changed is to submit an employee
change form. You were given US specific terms - I think
that you may have a different term in South Africa
(like ERC for Employee Request Change) - but anyway
my point is - this is the process and it would be
interesting to know whether you actually did try this?

Is your mail being incorrectly addressed (and therefore
badly delivered) or is even correctly addressed mail
	being incorrectly delivered?

Your current ELF entry bears the hallmarks of some manual
"adjustments". (Polit way of saying that someone has
been fiddling about). This is no way to solve the problem.
ELF is VTX. VTX infobases are fed by Personnel. Any
ELF "administration" fixes will be wiped by permanent
Personnel records as certainly as the rain will fall
	on my polished car.

Drive it through HRO and ask them to check up on their
	feeder dates.

/Chris.

The process in the US (not sure about South Africa), is that your
manager must change the location code and mail stop on your EDCF form.
Only (s)he can change it. This is entered into the ELF system from the
    personnel system.

    I hope this helps.

This is a problem I run into all the time.

People call and complain that they have moved but their mail is still
    going to their old location.

I try to explain, I can only change the extention and mailstop, no-one
can change the location except HR.

    The only solution folks,

Make sure all your paperwork gets to HR and if nothing changes, keep
sending the same information to them over and over again.

    Good luck :>)

Whilst I agree that this approach will work eventually, it's very
frustrating. I recommend a slightly different approach; fill out the form,
then take about 20 photocopies, and stick them in twenty internal mail
envelopes addressed to HR. Put one a day in the internal post until they
complain and tell you to stop.

    re last couple of messages

I am refering to mail as in parcel/letter in the post rather than
    All-In-1

eg see VTX SITES our location is JHB/xx for postage mail from other
internal locations. We no longer occupy the building referenced JHB/01
but occupy a building referenced by JHB/02 (I believe this is called a
    Mail-stop?)

All our SOCs etc envelopes etc goes to another building in another
area. Once in a while, someone goes over and fetches it all.

BTW it is every person in this location that has this problem.
