| If all he's looking for is email access, he should be able to get by
with a CompuServe account (or Prodigy or America OnLine). That's
likely to be cheaper than most other services (for small volumes of
mail).

| Indeed it depends on what the customer wants to do. There are a bunch
of "Freenet" sites that provide Internet access for free. Of course you
may be limited to Email (and then again, maybe not), but the Freenet
network is growing. A modem and a local call in Dayton Ohio gets me
access to "All the Gophers in the World" and a whole lot more.
If you tell us where the customer is, I can try to see if there's a
local Freenet s/he could tap into.

for LJSRV2::Internet_Tools. I am a beginner at this stuff but I do

| Information isn't well organized there. The best pointer I could find was
note 187.2. However, this brings up the better suggestion of going to
a bookstore and looking through the many books on "how to connect to the
Internet", most have lists of service providers. Also, in the back of each
issue of Computer Shopper magazine (the world's biggest) is a list of local
BBS systems, many of which advertise Internet access.

Obviously by calling someone besides us, judging by the wonderful
responses.
If it's a personal account, have him call AOL or Prodigy or Whoever.
If it's a corporate account, you would *think* Digital would be right
there, doing "whatever it takes", to sell the hardware, software, and
consulting. Maybe he'll have better luck with IBM or HP or "Fred's
Digital Consulting and Plant Care", 'eh? In the meantime, have tons of
fun reading books, cruising other notesfiles, learning NOTES, etc. as
per all the helpful suggestions.

and a quick look shows internet_tools among them. Yes!!!
You can find this at

p.s. STARS is a natural language parser so just put the words
you'd expect in the kind of note you are looking for in the
query box.
p.s.s. And you have to open the database first but the screens
walk you through all this.

Many of you have asked about how you may personally connect to the Internet
and access the World Wide Web out of your home. As you probably know, there
are numerous Internet Service providers in the market, all of whom offer
varying degrees of access to the Internet for differing prices. Although
Digital is not in a position to recommend or endorse any particular vendor,
we would like to highlight two vendors that cater to Internet access out of
the home.
NovaLink -- Special One Month Free Trial For Digital Employees
NovaLink Interactive Networks, has recently made a special offer to
Digital's employees, customers and/or vendors that we thought you may
wish to know about. NovaLink allows personal access to Mosaic, Internet
and more for $9.95 per month! Any desktop PC computer can have full
graphical access to the Internet with SuperNova from NovaLink Interactive
Networks. Local access numbers are available in thousands of U.S. cities.
NovaLink offers full Internet access including support of FTP, Telnet,
Usenet, Gopher, Veronica, Archie, and World Wide Web browsers such as Mosaic
and Netscape. Plus... online games, discussion and information.
All for $9.95/mo., which includes five hours daytime usage. (Additional
usage $3.60/hr.) Same low price includes local dial-up, daytime usage
and high speed access. Modem speeds of 9.6 or higher are necessary to
access Mosaic, however, a 2400 Baud or higher modem is adequate if you are
interested in merely a text access. Novalink software can be downloaded
to your PC and Novalink specialists will walk you thorugh any installation
needed. As an option, you may purchase two diskette set for local
installation ($8.95)
Digital customers, vendors, employees and partners are eligible for a
ONE-MONTH FREE TRIAL of up to ten hours at no charge. Call 1-800-274-2814
and identify yourself as an employee, customer or partner taking advantage
of the special Digital offer.
NETCOM On-line Communications Services
NETCOM has developed NetCruiser -- a graphical user interface for personal
computers using Microsoft's WINDOWS operating environment. Intended for the
user who wants to read and send electronic mail, read and post to USENET
newsgroups, to connect to remote computers using Telnet, to transfer text
or image files to or from remote computers, or to browse gopherspace and
the World Wide Web, NetCruiser allows you to click on icons or use menus
to use these common Internet Services. Additionally, NetCruiser users
receive their own private, Internet email address.
NetCruiser accounts include 40 hours of prime time access at no extra charge.
Prime time is defined as 9 am to Midnight, Monday through Friday. If you
accrue more than 40 prime time hours, the charge is $2.00 per hour.
NetCruiser accounts (charged to a major credit card) ...$19.95/month
NetCruiser setup fee ...................................$25.00
If interested, call 1-800-501-8649 and ask about a NetCruiser account.
Remember -- this is for private, home access and the cost is your personal
expense. It is not company policy to expense home access of the Internet.
If you have questions about these personal access providers, please call
Cinda George DTN: 543-3334.

3637.21 | Notesfile name that deals with Internet providers ? | CTHQ::COADY | | Sat Mar 04 1995 11:11 | 12 |

Though I know one doesn't normally ask this question here, this Note
seems to be a good place to start.
Is there a Notesfile that deals specifically with Internet Service providers
for personal use and discusses the pros', cons and costs. I looked thru the
Notes listing and a "search" didn't yield anything.
I'm interested in a low-cost (cheap) provider in the MA with local
connection in the greater 508 area.
Thanks for any pointers.
