| There's an old joke that goes:
Q: What do you get when you combine IBM and Apple?
A: IBM
Rumors of such a buyout are almost as recurrent as rumors that someone is
buying Digital.

| An article in the local Colorado Springs paper explained that it's looking
like a 3-way split of Apple between Oracle (they'd take the operating system)
and two other companies. Darned if I can remember the other two.

| Apple - Acquisition rumors boost stock
{The Boston Globe, 7-Jan-95, p. 68}
Apple stock jumped on a magazine report that three companies were seeking to
divide and take over the company. Software company Oracle, European consumer
products leader Philips Electronics NV and Japanese electronics giant
Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. were named as suitors in the Jan. 16
issue of Information Week. Apple stock closed up 3 1/8 at 42 on the Nasdaq
market, where it was the most active issue with more than 9.6 million shares
trading. At least one of the companies, Philips, flatly denied any
involvement. Both Apple and Oracle declined to comment.

An article in the local Colorado Springs paper explained that it's looking
like a 3-way split of Apple between Oracle (they'd take the operating system)
and two other companies. Darned if I can remember the other two.
But the article said Oracle Systems which I don't necessarily interpret to
mean Oracle Corporation. Since no company corporate headquarters or stock
market ticker symbol was included, I'm not convinced it's the same
company...

| CNN's Business Morning (6:30 this morning) gave a possible
explanation for Oracle's interest: even though they're a software
company, the desktop "PC" hardware business is almost guaranteed
to continue it's 15%+ annual growth for the foreseeable future,
and Apple/PowerMacs are in a good position to exceed that. kb
