someone decides to do a lor (local office referal) and some lucky field

3611.2 | We do DNS... | ODIXIE::FLAHERTY | | Wed Jan 04 1995 21:14 | 9 |
| Try calling the CNS Hotline. Here in Atlanta, we are responsible for
for both (DEC)DNS and DNS (BIND) for the entire South Central
Territories. If your node is also a DECnet node, it should be
registered in the corporate DNRS database. Also, if it is registered in
DNRS as an IP node, it should automatically get registered in the
Digital and BIND namespace. If you are located in the South/Central
Territory, call 1800 332-2468.

| Good luck - in the NE area it took 30+ days to resolve a DNS
corruption issue and then I think that the person who resolved it
legally had their name changed.

| re .0
Do you want someone someone who supports the software itself,
or someone who controls the registration of names in the
DNS databases within DEC? It sounds to me like you're asking
for the former, but your problem description ("can't resolve
the name") sounds like you need the latter.
In which case, it has nothing to do with "supporting Ultrix" --
it has to do with supporting the namespace. That is, they're
not expected to touch your machine, they're expected to fix
their database.
Maybe if you call them again and clarify what you're asking for...

3611.7 | well, it went like this... | ROMEOS::TREBILCOT_EL | | Thu Jan 05 1995 12:28 | 44 |
| .5: Thank you for the suggestion and it is the latter I need. I knew
that and tried to explain that to the woman in CNS I was talking to.
She said, "It's a mail problem," and I explained no, it wasn't...it was
a problem with the database, then she said, "It's an ULTRIX problem,"
and after sighing, I said, "No, it's a problem with the database. Do
you know who is in charge of that? Her answer, "We don't support
ULTRIX."
*SIGH*
re. -1 ... ThaNks I will try them.
The problem is that I am unable to send mail outside my local domain
(the gateway database is not resolving the domain name and unable to
deliver with a Host Unknown Message, and I am unable to receive any
mail. The first man in Colo Spgs I talked to said, "Your mail seems to
be set up correctly, if this doesn't work [rebooting] then I would call
the NSU ULTRIX group in Colo Spgs..." This was after doing a comp
followed by send -snoop -verbose...and according to my machine the mail
went through just fine but the recipient never received it...god only
knows where it ended up...
When I talked with Colo Spgs NSU ULTRIX rep...he said, "I am unable to
resolve the domain name." Then he said, "This isn't good...I can't
even see wro.dec.com..."
Then he suggested I talk with whoever maintained the dbase...he said
with all the reorg's he had no idea who that was. So I tried CNS and
talked with one guy who had no idea and elevated it..then the woman I
mentioned above called me back and she told me they didn't support
ULTRIX even though I KNEW it wasn't an ULTRIX problem...then the
original CNS guy called me back and said he didn't know who took care
of this.
SOOOooooo I called a friend in Palo Alto who is in the Alpha Migration
center and HE doesn't know who takes care of that anymore...everyone in
his group uses OSF/1...
And just think...I wonder if this is what customers go through? If so
I bet they are just SOooooo happy with Digital right now...
*SIGH*.....

3611.9 | Seen these problems before | SCCAT::HARVEY | Printserver Support- America's Zone | Thu Jan 05 1995 14:31 | 12 |
| I have worked this type of issue before. I had an ultrix node that
the name server would loose or the internal ip routers would have
corrupt data. The person to contact is the CNS hotline and ask to
Bang Can work the issue. He is at DTN 521-6645.
Alot of the problems were due to the internal networks folks
upgrading the network to DECNIS routers. It seemed that DECNET
took more priority in resolving that the IP problems. I had to
wait for three days to get the subnet 30 problem resolved, it
turned out to be a DECNIS route problem in MKO.
