3594.0. "Venturis HELP!!" by MSDOA::BOTT () Tue Dec 20 1994 17:02

I am looking for someone with some technical information about the
    Venturis560 PC. I have a reseller who received 11 FR-856AA-WC with 2 4
meg memory boards. The PC only has 2 slots so with the 2 4 meg boards
in the slots you can not upgrade the memory on the PC. I have gotten
several different answers within Digital and am totally frustrated. My
customer ordered an 8 meg upgrade board for each PC thinking that a
slot would be available and now he can not upgrade his PC to 16 meg and
is stuck with 8 meg only. Per my customer Digital advertised that the
PC was upgradeable. Why in the world would we ship 2 4 meg boards
instead of 1 8 meg is beyond my understanding?? Anyone have some
    technical information about this PC??

Nope, but other pc companies ship 2x 4, so I guess we do it too.

See 11784::DECPC_ENG for Venturis spec. It is not uncommon
for vendors to use the least expensive SIMMs (usually the
smaller SIMMs) to populate a board. This shouldn't exactly
be news to a reseller, FWIW. Order an 8Mb system from Gateway
without asking ahead of time, and you end up with all 4 banks
filled with 2Mb SIMMs. Likewise, order a 16Mb system from
Gateway and you get 4 4Mb SIMMs with no room for expansion.
The Venturis 560 can take single SIMMs (Gateway's Pentiums
can't), but you need to specify it. kb

Well, I got 4x4Mb on my Gateway Pentium; this in October '93,
and several reviews have also taken pot shots at the fully
    populated banks. kb

One beef with Gateway is that they won't ship 8MB simms, so if you
order 16 Mb, your 4 slots are full. Our PC group is going to have to
make tough decisions and compromises to compete, some of which seem
unbelievable to those not used to the wonderful world of PC's.

I worked through the identical problem earlier this month with one of
my customers. I contacted the US Product Marketing Manager for the
Venturis product. His name is Rich Bertuzzi and he can be reached at
DTN: 244-7709. He was very helpful!

According to Rich, as of the middle of December, the Kanata mfg plant
will install a single 8MB SIMM into the first open slot of a Venturis
560 package system that comes standard with 8MB of embedded memory.
Utilizing this approach, there will be an open slot for additional
    memory requirements.

I imagine that the Venturis 560 your customer received was built prior
to the middle of December. I suggest you call the Post Ship group at
PC BY DEC and ask them to help you resolve your memory issue.
