some time back.
And Dec Direct is being wound down & will cease trading on Jan 1st
in our part of the world. There must be better solutions, which other
readers will come up with...

| If you are unsuccessful with the other suggestions, you may want
to place a call to the ESSB or the USSSB. I know that the USSB
regularly does business with Digital Press. I do not have a phone
number for you but believe it would be in the Digital Telephone
Directory.
Good luck!

3575.9 | Web URL - and a plug for 'The UNIX Philosophy' | R2ME2::DEVRIES | Let your gentleness B evident 2 all | Fri Dec 16 1994 09:19 | 76 |

Subj: FLASH: USG ALUMNUS WRITES UNIX BOOK, BECOMES MULTI-MILLIONAIRE!
At least the first part is true. :-)
Since I'd spent six years in the UNIX group, I wanted to let you know about
this before it gets into Livewire and other places. Even though I'm working
in another part of Digital right now, I still consider the UNIX group my
Digital "home town."
After what seemed like an eternity, "The UNIX Philosophy" has just come off
the presses. The manuscript was finished about a year and a half ago, but
it fell into limbo while Digital Press was being sold to Butterworth-
Heinemann. The book is now debuting at DECUS in Anaheim this week.
What's the book about? It takes a detailed look at the UNIX way of doing
things: small, unifunctional programs that do one thing well; programs as
filters; the hidden value of code and data portability; rapid prototyping
the UNIX way; how the UNIX philosophy differs from other operating system
philosophies, including OpenVMS; plus much more.
Unlike most texts that focus on how to do things with UNIX, The UNIX
Philosophy focuses squarely on "why UNIX?" in the first place. If you're
new to UNIX (which doesn't apply to most of you, right? :-)), it is the
first book you should read before tackling the other UNIX books on the
market. It will help you make sense of all of the others. If you're a
real UNIX person, The UNIX Philosophy is the sort of book that you will
want to wave in the face of anyone who criticizes the UNIX way of doing
things and say, "See here. THIS is why we do it this way!"
If you'll check the Acknowledgements section, you'll find that Jon "Maddog"
Hall of USG's marketing organization, Fred Avolio (formerly of Digital),
and Aaron Sawyer of USG's Quality Group were among the technical reviewers.
The particulars:
'The UNIX Philosophy' by Mike Gancarz. Published by Digital Press,
an imprint of Butterworth-Heinemann. 151 pages. $19.95 list.
ISBN #1-55558-123-4.
You can find more information about it under the new books section at
gopher.std.com or the following Web URL:
gopher://gopher.std.com/11/Book%20Sellers/DIGITAL-PRESS
You should be able to go to any bookstore and order it (it's too new to
be on the shelves yet). You can also order it directly from Digital
Press (Butterworth-Heinemann) by sending a request for information to
"[email protected]". Or you can call the publisher at 1-800-366-2665
and use your credit card. (I don't know whether it is available to
DEC-ies at a discount. I won't be able to find that out until next
week.)
The book is a great rebuttal to the new "UNIX-Haters Handbook" that just
appeared on the shelves at Barnes and Noble.
Since this is my first book, my mother is telling everyone in southern
NH about it.
Am I excited? Is 'UNIX' a four-letter word?
Warmest regards,
Mike Gancarz

Personally, if UNIX is the answer, then we have clearly forgotten the question!
Many thanks to the WWW pointer for Digital Press.

I second that!
While we're on the subject, does anyone know what happened to John A. Osborn Jr.
(manager of Digital Press at the time it was sold)? Since he's no longer on ELF,
I assume he's working elsewhere now.
This isn't casual snoopiness. When he and I both worked in Nashua (he in ZKO,
and I in NUO), I used to get LOTS of mail, email, and phone calls intended for
him. I occasionally still do, though rarely, now. I'd like to direct the few
items I get (mostly calls) to the right place, if possible.
Thanks from John D. Osborne (with an "e"!)
