3554.0. "Turning the corner?" by CIMBAD::ASHLEY () Tue Dec 06 1994 16:55

For the first time in a while I'm getting optimistic about Digital's
future because of the following items (in no particular order).
    How about you?

	o Racy TV ads
	o New Alpha BIPs chip
	o Corporate, CSG organizational changes
	o New PCI based systems
o New desktop, portable and retail PC lines
	o Intel FPU commotion
o PCI, network and video peripheral chips
	o Network Hubs and software
o NT 3.5 and growing number of RISC PC vendors
	o Microsoft network contract win
	o Videoserver trials
	o Comdex awards and feedback

The title of a presentation I made to a District wide Sales meeting was:

Why I Have More Faith in Digital's Future Now Than I Did 6 Months Ago...

And at the end of the presentation, the hard-headed, practical, dollar-driven,
cynical and hype-proof Sales people in the room agreed with me.

Keep the faith, people.

Many people who were at COMDEX last month felt the same way, employees and
customers alike. I heard many comments like "it's good to see Digital back
again". In the C&P area, there was honest excitement about Digital's products
and prices from everyone.

Yes, it feels like we have turned the corner and are already speeding up the
next block!

Me too! I've felt that DIGITAL turned the corner a couple of
months ago. Went to a C & P training session in September, things like
Multia, VT5XX family, the new Laser printers - DEClaser 3500 with
    PostScript FAX option.

A tremendous line up of new C & P products - most encouraging!!!

Just wish that the 4 1/2 year pay freeze we've had in UK would be
lifted, and an end to the uncertainties of security of employment were
finished! We have lost nearly 50% of the UK DIGITAL population in the
    last 5 years with downsizing.

I agree with Malcolm. I've seen some exciting products being announced
and at least where on national TV.

The only thing better now would be if Digital would reward the
"survivors" with decent pay increases for a change.

Speaking as one affected by the wage freeze directly,

    Ken,

Your presentation sounds like valuable material for those of us who
make and/or create presentations for a living. Would you be willing to
put it in a public directory, or at least send me a copy?

    Thanks, Marc

RE: .8, .10

The presentation I talked about in .3 is now available in:

	ODIXIE::U4$:[MOREAU.PUBLIC]VMSSEP94.PPT

It was written using PowerPoint V4.0. Permission is hereby given to share
the slides and/or information in that presentation with any Digital employee,
but permission is explicitly *DENIED* to share it with customers. This was
an internal presentation to a Digital only audience, and would need to be
cleansed severely for customers.

Keep in mind when you read it that this was written and delivered in September.
Therefore, it includes only some of the November announcement, only mentions
the possibility of the advertising campaign we are now seeing, and does not
even reference the push to get our products (including Celebris and Venturis,
as well as all of our desktop printers) into pure consumer markets. These are
all factors which make me feel even better about Digital, but are not in the
talk as it stands.

This is the first half of the talk. The second half came from the presentation
by the Corporat Strategy Group that I mentioned elsewhere in this notes file,
and covered the points that have been talked about in that discussion. I am
still trying to find the time to write up that discussion, but perhaps one of
the people who attended the seminar can do so.

    Hallo guys,

cool down, indeed, we have good products, but when you want to buy a
PC made by DEC you have to wait more than 8 weeks, due to the fact,
that they can't deliver them here in Europe.

Many customers went to other companies to get their pc's.

Moral is quite down, because 1500 of 4700 resources are outsourced
in the next month (Germany). As I know DIGITAL in France
has massive layoffs. That's not the reason to be enthusiastic.

Moral is quite down, because 1500 of 4700 resources are outsourced

I didn't think we got 4700 left (before this last rightsizing).

Meeting and talking with DECcies form other (European) countries, I
must say that morale here in Germany is even much worse than elswhere
    (not that I wonder).
3554.14COST YES, MORALE NONEMAIL::HEINZMon Dec 12 1994 10:376
From a numbers/cost standpoint, Digital might be doing better. However,
morale is quit low due to overwork by those that are left. Rumor has
it that massive layoffs are still in the cards just before Christmas
thereby increasing that workload for the survivors even more! Please
dispel those rumors and that we are not cutting, maybe getting some
relief and pay increases. Then, Digital will have turned the corner!

During the holidays, I visited several old friends at the various
parties, etc., that I'm sure you're all familiar with...

When introduced to a friend of a friend, on several occasions, they asked,
"Where do you work?" I answered "Digital Equipment." The response
from two people: "Oh really? I heard you're making a comeback."

    Felt good...

Could it be employees cashing out there stock with taxes delayed
