| I found out a bit more about the Achille Lauro. It caught fire on
Wednesday morning somewhere near Mombasa. Approximately 1000 people
were saved, but three lost their lives. The ship sunk on Friday evening
during an attempt to tow it away.

| The symbolism would have been more complete had the ship sunk, while
floundering in place and being bailed by the last remaining crew
member, the others having been "right-sized" off the ship earlier.
Meanwhile, the captain, impeccable attired as always looked on from
the shore and expressed dissapointment that the crew member hadn't
bailed harder. Other ships officers were not available for comment, as
they were busy in meetings trying to come up with a reorganization plan
for the ships fire fighting teams. Rescued passengers complained that
when they called for help, they were informed that the lifeboat crews
were no longer with the ship, since lifeboats were now considered
commodities and passengers were expected to help themselves into the
boats.

Actually, on some headline news video, both crew and pax were
throwing buckets of water on the fire.
The real digital parallel:
1) The captain will be the last to leave the ship.
2) If you see the captain leave ahead of you, you are
to assume the rank of captain.

How many people remember living on it during DECville ?
The rumour was that Gadaffi was going to hijack something, but
nobody knew what it was going to be. The Achille Lauro was seen
as a great opportunity for him. Remember the helicopters flying
over the ship every hour on the hour, the French police (CRS?)
sending divers down to check for mines on the hull ?
There was also a rumour that there were 12 MOSAD on the ship,
pretneding to be DECcies. These guys were 12 feet tall, unshaven
and built like the proverbial brick wall. I remember walking round
the deck very late at night being "checked-out" by two of them. These
boys were big.
Do you remember the exotic dancers ? The Achille was a cruise ship
and it tried to continue to operate as if it were on a cruise.
The cabaret ran every night. The first night we were all too
sophisticated to go and watch a "cruise-line-night-show". By the
end of the first week, you couldn't get near the floor show for
400+ craved DECcies whistling and cheering on the exotic dancers.
A happy days, sigh.

You mean the ones with the whips, or being whipped? Yeah, that was a fun
time. I also remember lying on the sun deck and getting covered with soot,
the crew holding lifeboat drills at 6 am and yelling as loud as they could;
we couldn't really think of it as a luxury liner as most of the papers
reported a couple of weeks ago.
It was still a funny feeling when it went down, tho.
